Abolish the rule where you can only display L or P plates on the outside of the car in NSW
The issue
Learner and provisional/probational licenced drivers cannot display their respective plates from the inside of their car in New South Wales, Australia which is the only state that has this rule, but why? There doesn't seem to be any reason as to why it only applies in this state.
In other states, you have the choice to display your L or P plates from either the inside (via the front and rear windows) or the outside of your car. This is not the case in New South Wales. Below are six reasons in no particular order as to why displaying your plates from the inside of your car poses an advantage over displaying them from the outside.
1. The L or P plates will be protected against damage, dirt, detachment and theft.
2. Your vehicle's paintwork will not get any scratches from plastic plates or fading from magnetic plates.
3. Your vehicle will have a cleaner and overall nicer look.
4. You will most likely never need to replace them unless they've been sun faded.
5. In the event where the plates may fall off, they can be easily retrieved and used again instead of going missing and becoming litter.
6. Most interior P plates tend to have two sides, one for red and one for green P's. This ends up being a cost effective way to essentially reuse the same plates even when you transition from your red P's to your green P's.
For those of you who may be wondering how this change would turn out and if it would be a success in the end, just take a look at every other state in the country and how their learner and provisional drivers are able to display their plates from the inside of their cars, it doesn't seem to be affecting them negatively whatsoever.
If we get rid of this rule in New South Wales, future learner and provisional drivers will be able to display their respective plates either from the interior or the exterior of their car just like in every other state.
