Abolish the Right to Veto in the United Nations Security Council

The Issue

As a concerned global citizen, I have witnessed the misuse of veto power by permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. This practice has repeatedly obstructed global democratic processes and hindered resolution on pressing international issues. The right to veto, which allows any one of these five permanent members to block any resolution, is not globally democratic. It should be replaced with a majority vote system where resolutions are binding if they receive majority support.

The current structure of the Security Council reflects a post-World War II world order that is no longer relevant or representative. The council needs reform and expansion to include more countries from what could be described as the "global south." This change would prevent bias based on economic, military, or political alliances and ensure fair representation for all nations.

According to research conducted by Global Policy Forum (2015), since 1946 Russia has used its veto power 128 times while America has used it 82 times - often for their own national interests rather than global peacekeeping objectives.

One specific example is the United States' veto in February 2011 of a UN Security Council resolution that sought to condemn Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal. The resolution had widespread international support, but the U.S. used its veto power to block its adoption, citing concerns about the potential negative impact on peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

Another example is the U.S. veto in December 2017 of a resolution calling for the withdrawal of the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The resolution was brought forward after the U.S. decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem, and the veto underscored the U.S. support for Israel's position on the status of Jerusalem.

It's time we demand an end to this outdated system that perpetuates inequality among nations and hinders effective decision-making at a global level. We need your support in urging UN member states and Secretary-General António Guterres to abolish veto rights in favor of majority voting within an expanded Security Council of permanent members.
