It is time for a serious national conversation about the future of the monarchy.

For generations, the British royal family has been presented as a symbol of honour, duty, and tradition. But a modern democratic society must also be built on accountability, equality, and justice. No family should hold lifelong privilege, power, and public funding simply because of birth.

The scandal involving Prince Andrew and his association with convicted offender Jeffrey Epstein has deeply shaken public trust. The timeline of events raises serious questions about judgment and responsibility.

In 1999, Andrew reportedly met Epstein through Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Over the following years, Andrew visited Epstein’s homes and attended social gatherings with him. Even after Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to offences involving minors, Andrew remained in contact.

In 2010, photographs emerged of Andrew walking with Epstein in New York after Epstein’s conviction, sparking international criticism. In 2019, Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre alleged she had been trafficked to Andrew when she was 17. Andrew denied the allegation, but the controversy intensified after his widely criticised interview on the BBC program BBC Newsnight.

In 2022, Andrew reached a civil settlement with Giuffre without admitting liability. The fallout led to him being stripped of royal duties and titles by King Charles III.

This scandal has damaged the reputation of the monarchy and forced many people to question whether hereditary power still has a place in a modern democracy. The issue is not just about one individual — it is about whether institutions that claim moral authority should be held to the same standards as everyone else.

If democracy means anything, it must mean that no one is above scrutiny and no institution is beyond reform. The time has come to openly debate whether the monarchy should continue, or whether nations should move toward systems where leadership is chosen by the people rather than inherited.

Real respect for a nation comes from transparency, justice, and equality — not from crowns or titles.
