The Issue
My journey has given me a unique perspective on challenges faced by those who menstruate, and I have personally experienced the financial burdens associated with menstrual products. I am a trans male, but during my time identifying as female, I regularly encountered an issue that many individuals face—having to choose between purchasing essential menstrual products or other necessities like food.
Menstrual products are not luxury items; they are essential for maintaining health and dignity. However, the current taxation on these products in the UK adds an unnecessary financial burden, particularly for those already struggling financially. This situation can lead to the distressing decision of prioritizing basic needs, such as food, over necessary health products, which is neither fair nor just.
Statistics reveal that approximately 1 in 10 girls in the UK have been unable to afford menstrual products, leading to missed school days and significant impacts on education and wellbeing. This isn't just a women's issue but a societal one that affects families, workplaces, and the wider community.
The UK has made strides in addressing period poverty, such as zero-rating VAT on sanitary products from January 2021, following years of advocacy by campaigners. However, there are still remaining taxes and fees that further inflate costs. These barriers must be removed entirely to ensure that menstrual products are truly accessible to everyone who needs them.
By eliminating all taxes and fees on menstrual products, we can take a significant step toward gender equality, ensuring everyone has access to basic hygiene without financial strain. This policy change would pave the way for broader initiatives aimed at tackling period poverty and securing menstrual equity.
Join me in urging the UK government to completely abolish any remaining taxes and fees on menstrual products. By doing so, we can alleviate unnecessary financial burdens and promote a fairer, more equitable society for everyone. Please sign this petition to make menstrual products tax-free and accessible to all.
