Abolish our school's outdated dress code

The Issue

Roseville Area School district's current dress code is unfairly targeting female students. Recently, I was dress coded for wearing shorts because they were "rolled" at the waist. However, when I pointed out a classmate who had also rolled their sweatpants, my teacher didn't care. This discrepancy highlights a concerning bias in how the dress code is enforced—boys can sag their jeans without consequence, but girls face scrutiny for wearing shorts or tank tops, which are simply expressions of our contemporary style.

This isn't just about clothing; it's about ensuring equal treatment and respect for all students. The dress code, as it stands, disproportionately affects female students by policing their attire while allowing male students more freedom. This is not justifiable in a progressive and inclusive educational environment. We need a dress code that reflects modern values, respects individuality, and promotes fairness and equality among all students. The current dress coding the staff is doing is distracting students from doing their job. A dress code is supposed to prevent distraction but it is leading to more distractions because of enforcement. Its causing stress and worry throughout the day by students wondering "Will I get dress coded?". We're getting dress coded without have clear rules on whats "appropriate" and what's not. In the past it has not be enforced so why now?

Several schools across the nation have successfully implemented updated dress codes (or gotten rid of them) that respect students' rights to express themselves while maintaining a focus on learning.

It's time for our district to follow suit. We need to get rid of the dress code and let students focus on their jobs. If having a dress code is required, use Policy 510s dress code that excplicitly states what can not be worn. Please join me in calling on our school administrators to review and revise the current dress code policies. Let's work together to ensure our school stands for fairness and equality.
