Abolish or Modify Senate Bill 185 in Indiana: Don't Ban Electronics in School

Abolish or Modify Senate Bill 185 in Indiana: Don't Ban Electronics in School
The Issue
For many of us, including myself, the ban on Electronics at school is a personal issue that creates an overly harsh environment and stifles the joy of learning. Senate Bill 185 threatens to strip away the essential digital tools that drive creativity, learning, and communication within our educational institutions in Indiana.
School isn't solely about formal education; it's also about developing critical thinking, working collaboratively, and learning to adapt in an ever-evolving digital world. According to U.S. Department of Education research, technology can be a powerful teaching tool. Students who use digital devices for learning perform better in certain subjects, promoting experiential learning, increasing student engagement, and promoting individual learning styles. Imposing strict bans, as proposed by Senate Bill 185, is a step backward.
Taking away Electronics also directly impacts students with learning differences who depend on technology to succeed academically. This harm increases the existing disparities in our educational system, contradicting the principles of equality and inclusiveness on which our nation was built.
It's essential that the Indiana Senate reconsiders this approach. We need to refine Senate Bill 185: propose reasonable rules for the use of these devices, promote digital literacy, educate about online safety, and ensure inclusivity. This ensures a bright and accessible future for all students in Indiana, and respects their right to a comprehensive, engaging, and inclusive education.
