Abolish Mansfield State High School's mobile phone policy

The issue

I've personally faced the consequences of the current mobile phone policy at Mansfield State High School when I got suspended simply for having my phone in my bag. I'm not alone in this; many other students have also been penalized under this policy. It's time for change.

The current policy requires students to hand over their phones and subjects them to random bag checks by teachers, disrupting our sense of privacy and autonomy. Like many schools, Mansfield State High aims to maintain a learning-conducive environment, but prohibiting phones entirely and policing possession doesn't effectively contribute to this goal.

In today's digital age, smartphones are not just tools for communication but are essential for learning and safety. Students should have the right to keep their phones safely in their bags without the fear of suspension.

By revisiting this policy, Mansfield State High can adopt a more balanced approach that respects students' needs while maintaining discipline. Schools like Meridan State College have adopted policies allowing phones to be used during recess and lunch, enhancing students’ time-management and communication skills.

Let’s advocate for a policy that respects our privacy and recognizes students as responsible individuals capable of discretion. Support this petition, and let's encourage Mansfield State High to reconsider its mobile phone policy for the well-being and development of its students.

Sign the petition to stand with me and many others who believe in a fairer mobile phone policy at Mansfield State High School.
