Even though America has employed an all-volunteer military since 1973, many would be surprised to learn that the Selective Service-- America's draft machine-- receives full federal funding to this day.

Maintaining the system is not cheap: it costs America $22 million annually (as of FY 2009), which is more than the vast majority of us will make over the course of an entire lifetime.
