Ann Widdecombe was a remarkable and influential politician known for her outspoken, feisty, and compassionate nature. In addition to her political career, she was a cherished charity patron, dedicating her life to the well-being and betterment of those less fortunate. Tragically, her life was cut short when she was murdered in her own home just days ago – a heinous act that has shocked the nation and left many in deep distress.

Now, we are confronted with an alarming situation at Aberdeen University, where Heather Herbert, an employee, has publicly celebrated the murder of Ann Widdecombe on social media. Herbert's comments are reported to include:

"I hope she was handcuffed to the bed as she screamed in agony." Even when challenged, the former Green and Labour member said: "I'm done with being nice to peices (sic) of human garbage like her."

 Such behaviour is not only deeply distasteful and unacceptable but also sets a dangerous precedent. It undermines values of respect, empathy, and dignity that should be upheld by all members of an academic institution, and of society at large.

Aberdeen University is a respected establishment of over 500 years' standing, known for its commitment to fostering an environment of tolerance, understanding, and inclusion. Allowing someone who glorifies violence and tragedy to remain employed contradicts the university’s core values, tarnishes its esteemed reputation, and may contravene the Equality Act (2010).

The actions of Heather Herbert demonstrate a grave lack of judgment and empathy, and they bring into question this person's suitability as en employee of an educational institution. It is imperative that Aberdeen University addresses this matter urgently by terminating Herbert's employment. This decision is not just about accountability but also about sending a clear message against hate, insensitivity, and relishing the horrific demise of an elderly lady.
