This change harms students who, among others, are working while going to school (i.e., need more section options) or are trying to specialize in less common but still plenty crucial programs (i.e., sections will inherently be smaller). Tanya Millner (AACC's VP of Learning) told AACC's student newspaper in May: "There are multiple factors to consider when we look at running a low-enrolled class. If a student needs a capstone course, a specialized class, or a specific course to graduate or transfer within a semester, we will make an exception." How and when will that be decided? Will students be consulted before the decision is made? Also, per the article, "the suggestion came from consulting firm rpk GROUP, which the school hired to assess how efficiently it uses its resources." As stated in the body of this petition, this is likely to disproportionately impact low income and minority students. Did rpk or AACC assess historical enrollment data to determine whether this change violates Section V.A.1.b of AACC's Interim Nondiscrimination Policy?: "Disparate impact discrimination occurs when policies or practices that appear to be neutral unintentionally result in a disproportionate impact on a group or person based on their actual or perceived Protected Characteristic and that: 1) Excludes an individual from participation in; 2) Denies the individual benefits of; or 3) Otherwise adversely affects a term or condition of an individual’s employment by or participation in the College’s education program or activity."
