A Wellness Garden Orchard in Crowcroft Park, Bowling Green
The Issue
Please sign this petition in support of the wellness garden orchard, in the bowling green in Crowcroft park.
Join us on Saturday 18th February 2023, 11am for the planting of a pear orchard in the lower bowling green. Samosa's served in Longsight Art Space after planting, at 2pm.
'Orchards have played an important role in communities for many centuries, providing a focal point to gathering, and a place where people and the rest of nature successfully work together to create abundant harvests, providing fresh fruit.'
The Orchard Project
With the local community, The Orchard Project and Longsight Art Space want to create an oasis in Crowcroft Park
It will be a garden orchard, with different fruit trees, flowers, herbs, and shrubs. Planted with help from The Orchard Project, it will be in a forest orchard style (needing minimal maintenance) and designed in consultation with the local community in and around Northmoor Road, Longsight.
It will be a place;
- For rest and relaxation
- To experience the seasons (blossoms in the spring, fruit by the autumn)
- A home for wildlife (birds, bees and pollinators)
- That works with nature (organic)
- To learn garden skills
- To gain traditional skills such as pruning and grafting
- To enjoy outdoor art
- To gather with friends and family
- To play
- To enjoy free, seasonal fruits and berries
- Where we build diverse and resilient eco systems locally
- To tackle the climate emergency
- Of beauty
- To invite nature into an suburban environment
Proposed area:
Lower Bowling Green for fruit trees/ Upper Bowling Green for the garden orchard
The planting of a garden orchard in the style of a forest orchard within the upper bowling green will ensure that a garden can be cared for, accessible to all and resilient against some local challenges (i.e. vandalism).
It also allows us to grow heritage varieties of apples and pear trees.
