In English, the name of our country is “Turkey”. The same word is also the name of a famous bird, as well as being a term frequently used to mock or insult someone. In the USA our Turkish children sometimes come home from school distressed or crying after being humiliated by other children, who use the name of our children’s native country to hurt them or to make them the butt of their jokes. Unfortunately, this disrespectful behavior is not confined only to the immaturity of children; some adults also cannot resist the temptation to join in the “fun”. For those of us from Türkiye, this situation both pains and worries us, as well as others who are not our fellow Turks but nonetheless understand and share our pain. They stand in solidarity with us. Please help us to change the English name of our country to its true spelling and pronunciation of “Turkiye."
