A NEW STAIRCASE FOR GRASMERE PRIMARY SCHOOL

The school’s library steps are narrow and unsafe; they were deemed a health and safety risk by the council years ago (someone from the Learning Trust actually fell down the stairs at one point). Yet nothing has been done to change them, and the Grasmere kids still can’t access their library safely (Nursery and Reception don’t use the library that much because of these stairs). This situation has been going on for over 10 years now.

What’s more, there is currently no shelter or play equipment in the KS2 playground, and the school has very limited outdoor space.

The school's PTA, Friends of Grasmere School, would like to work with the council to demolish the old staircase and adjoining shed, and replace that with a long balcony at the front and stairs at the side.

As well as access to the library, we hope that the structure will provide a quiet space, shelter underneath, and perhaps a play element too in the form of a slide or a climbing wall. We estimate this much needed project – basically a staircase + shelter + play equipment all in one – will cost around £30,000, including the demolition of the existing stairs and the construction of the new structure.

Please help us get one step closer to our goal by signing this petition to request that the council prioritise this health & safety issue at the school, and engage with the school community on how to resolve it in the safest, most useful and cost-efficient way.
