A nature reset for Government: Four urgent asks
The Issue
For decades, the United Kingdom has stood as a beacon of hope for nature conservation, implementing legal protections that safeguarded our precious natural heritage in lockstep with our international allies. However, we are now witnessing a troubling reversal of these protections, with long-standing policies being dismantled at an alarming rate. This must not continue.
I have been fortunate enough to gather the support of esteemed individuals and organisations who share this concern. Well over 100 leading figures, NGOs and businesses have signed this letter. Among them are the expert economist Sir Partha Dasgupta, leading ecologist Sir John Lawton, and bold campaigners like Chris Packham and Dale Vince. Celebrated authors Paul Sterry and Ben Rawlence, and distinguished actor and nature ambassador, David Oakes have also lent their voices to this urgent plea.
We are collectively urging the next Prime Minister of the UK to adopt these four critical measures for nature:
1. **Treat Nature as Vital National Infrastructure**: Recognise the intrinsic value of a strategic nature network, supporting natural ecosystems as vital components of our national infrastructure, deserving of investment and preservation.
2. **Protect Nature at the Point of Harm**: Reinstate strong legal frameworks that prevent and minimise harm to nature at the very point where it is threatened, ensuring immediate action to prevent further degradation. This drives better business decision-making, investment and innovation in protecting and enhancing nature. This also reverses widening nature and health inequality for deprived and minority communities, as warned about in this 'Green Gap Report.'
3. **Support Nature-Friendly Farming and British Food**: Promote agricultural practices that are sustainable and beneficial to biodiversity, providing incentives for farmers who implement eco-friendly methods, and ensure a domestic healthy food supply and security.
4. **Plan for Communities, Health, and Nature**: Integrate nature into urban and rural planning to enhance community well-being and public health, creating green spaces that benefit both people and the environment. Invest in a faster, high-trust planning system that reduces costs and risks of development.
We stand at a critical juncture where immediate action is not just necessary but vital to prevent irreversible damage to our natural world. Let us come together, with the backing of experts and advocates, to ensure that the UK Government prioritises nature in its policy-making.
Sign this petition to urge the next Prime Minister to take decisive action and reset the Government's approach to safeguarding nature. Your signature could help secure a thriving natural environment for generations to come. Let us stand together for nature, our national heritage.
