A memorial garden in Edinburgh remembering victims of the 8–9 January 2026 events in Iran
The Issue
🌸 A Flower for Every Life Lost🌸
We are asking for your support to create a memorial space in Edinburgh where up to 36,500 flowers or similar will be planted—one for each life believed to have been lost across more than 400 cities in Iran during the nights of 8–9 January 2026.
In this memorial space, we propose to install a symbolic statue of the heroic firefighter Hamid Mahdavi, who was reportedly shot dead while helping wounded people, despite wearing a white cloth to signal that he posed no threat.
During those two dark nights, widespread peaceful protests across Iran were met with extreme and coordinated violence. Protesters were reportedly attacked in brutal ways, and there are claims that foreign militia were involved in the crackdown. Victims are said to include men, women (including pregnant women), young people, and children.
Numerous testimonies describe injured protesters being killed while seeking medical help in streets, homes, hospitals, and ambulances. Some reports state that bodies—many with close-range gunshot wounds to the head and with medical aid items still attached—were piled together without dignity.
Observers and scholars have warned that the scale and speed of the killings may represent one of the most severe episodes of violence against protesters in modern times. Some commentators have drawn comparisons with mass atrocities of the twentieth century, including those of the Second World War.
This memorial would create a peaceful space of remembrance, reflection, and awareness, ensuring that these lives are not forgotten.
A single flower cannot change the past, but 36,500 flowers can ensure the world remembers.
No financial support is requested for this initiative.
