However, in recent years, a shadow has fallen over this vibrant community. The very essence of what makes Pokémon special is being eroded by a relentless pursuit of profit, leading to rampant scalping, market manipulation, and a distribution system that often feels stacked against the most dedicated fans. We are seeing a disheartening trend where genuine enthusiasts, from young children just starting their collections to seasoned veterans, are being priced out and pushed away. It's a critical moment, and without intervention, an entire generation of potential lifelong fans risks being lost to the very greed that now plagues our beloved hobby. 

This petition is a heartfelt appeal to The Pokémon Company International to remember its foundational values and to take decisive action. We believe that by addressing the core issues outlined below, TPCi can restore fairness, accessibility, and joy to the Pokémon TCG for everyone.

This isn't a hypothetical scenario; it's a frustrating reality for countless fans. Websites like the Pokémon Center, intended to be a direct source for enthusiasts, frequently see their stock of highly anticipated items, such as Elite Trainer Boxes for sets like Destined Rivals and Prismatic Evolutions, vanish in mere minutes. This isn't just about inconvenience; it's about a fundamental denial of access. These products then reappear on secondary marketplaces like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, not at their intended retail price, but at drastically inflated rates—often 150% or more above MSRP within hours of release, as highlighted by a 2023 market study. This artificial scarcity creates a barrier that prevents genuine collectors and players from acquiring cards at fair value, forcing them to either pay exorbitant prices or miss out entirely. The joy of the chase is replaced by the despair of being priced out, undermining the very spirit of collecting.

2. The Unsettling Reality of Corporate Greed and Inflated Prices

It's one thing for individual scalpers to exploit demand, but it's far more disheartening when authorized retailers, who are meant to serve the community, engage in similar practices. GameStop, a prominent retailer for many Pokémon fans, has unfortunately become a prime example of this. We've seen sleeved booster packs, typically priced at a modest $5, being sold for $7 or even more. Elite Trainer Boxes, once a staple for collectors, have seen their prices steadily climb from $60 to nearly $100 in their stores. Most alarmingly, reports indicate that for the highly anticipated 30th-anniversary sets, GameStop has listed products with markups approaching an astonishing 260% above MSRP. This isn't just a slight increase; it's a deliberate strategy that transforms a major retail outlet into a corporate scalper. When products are sold at such drastically overinflated prices before they even reach the general public, it creates an insurmountable barrier for the average consumer, effectively pricing out countless fans who simply want to enjoy the hobby without breaking the bank. This practice by a trusted retailer sends a confusing and damaging message to the community, eroding trust and making the hobby feel inaccessible.

3. The Betrayal of Distributor "Backdooring" and the "Rip and Ship" Phenomenon

Perhaps one of the most frustrating and damaging aspects of the current market is the blatant disregard for release dates by some distributors. We have witnessed, with growing dismay, how highly anticipated sets like Ascended Heroes and Pitch Black are being opened and sold on platforms like Whatnot and TikTok weeks before their official street date. These early sales, often weeks ahead of the general public, involve packs being sold for $20 each—a staggering 400% markup over the typical MSRP of around $5. These products often bear explicit "Do Not Sell Before [Date]" warnings, yet they are clearly being funneled through illicit channels. Evidence suggests that some distributors are "backdooring" cases of product to high-volume streamers, completely bypassing the traditional retail ecosystem, including our beloved Local Game Stores (LGS). This practice not only undermines the integrity of the release schedule but also creates an unfair advantage for a select few, leaving the vast majority of collectors feeling cheated and disillusioned. It's a direct assault on the fairness and accessibility that should define our hobby.

4. The Perilous Rise of "Rip and Ship" Culture and Associated Scams

The emergence of "rip and ship" streaming on platforms like Whatnot and TikTok has introduced a troubling, gambling-like element into the Pokémon TCG hobby. While some streamers operate ethically, the environment is unfortunately ripe for exploitation. We have seen numerous documented instances where streamers have been caught on camera resealing packs, subtly swapping out valuable "chase" cards for less desirable ones, or even outright stealing high-value pulls from unsuspecting buyers. This predatory culture thrives on the "Fear Of Missing Out" (FOMO), encouraging impulsive and often financially irresponsible spending, particularly among younger or more vulnerable audiences. It represents a stark departure from the community-focused, transparent interactions that have historically characterized the hobby, actively undermining the trust between sellers and buyers and making it difficult for genuine collectors to participate without fear of being scammed. The LGS, once a bastion of fair play and community, is increasingly sidelined by these unregulated online practices.

5. The Speculative Bubble: When a Hobby Becomes a High-Stakes Investment

What was once a joyful pastime has, for many, transformed into a high-stakes investment market. The Pokémon TCG, fueled by celebrity endorsements and social media hype, saw its market value explode from $600 million in 2019 to an estimated $2.7 billion by 2026. While growth can be positive, this rapid financialization has attracted a wave of speculators and "flippers" whose primary interest is profit, not passion. This speculative bubble creates immense market volatility. For instance, a significant market correction in 2022-2023 saw prices for many modern sets, like Shining Fates, plummet by as much as 60%. It is often the casual collectors and new entrants, drawn in by the hype, who suffer the most when these bubbles burst, losing significant value on their purchases. The constant focus on market value and investment potential overshadows the inherent joy of collecting, playing, and sharing, fundamentally altering the spirit of the Pokémon TCG from a community-driven hobby to a stressful financial endeavor.

We respectfully demand the following actions to ensure a fair, transparent, and accessible Pokémon TCG market for everyone:

Strict Enforcement of Street Dates and Distributor Accountability: TPCi must conduct thorough investigations into distributors who are leaking products to unauthorized channels, such as "rip and ship" streamers, weeks before official release dates. Severe penalties, including contract termination, must be imposed on any distributor found to be undermining the integrity of product launches. This will ensure that all retailers and consumers have an equal opportunity to access new products simultaneously.

Transparent Distribution and Fair Allocation for All: We urge TPCi to audit its distribution network, particularly regarding how "Elite" status and product allocations are determined. The current system often disadvantages smaller, community-focused Local Game Stores (LGS), with many receiving zero allocations for popular sets. TPCi must prioritize fair and equitable allocation to LGS, recognizing their vital role in fostering local communities and providing accessible play spaces, rather than allowing product to be concentrated in the hands of large corporate entities or online speculators.

Robust Anti-Bot Measures and Verified Fan Access: To combat the pervasive issue of automated purchasing bots, TPCi and its retail partners must implement advanced anti-bot technologies. This includes exploring and adopting systems like lottery-based purchasing, verified-account-only preorders, or CAPTCHA challenges for high-demand products on platforms like the Pokémon Center. The goal is to ensure that genuine fans, not automated programs, have the primary opportunity to purchase products at MSRP.

Prioritize Community-Focused Retail Over Speculative Platforms: TPCi should actively support and prioritize traditional, brick-and-mortar Local Game Stores. These stores are the backbone of the Pokémon TCG community, offering safe spaces for play, trade, and social interaction. This prioritization should come at the expense of platforms that facilitate "rip and ship" activities, which often promote gambling-like behavior and contribute to market instability, rather than fostering healthy community engagement.

Enforce Fair Pricing and Protect Consumers from Corporate Scalping: TPCi must establish and strictly enforce policies that require all authorized sellers, including major corporate retailers like GameStop, to adhere to the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). Retailers found to be artificially inflating prices, as seen with GameStop's significant markups, should face severe consequences, including reduced product allocations or the revocation of their authorized seller status. This measure is crucial to protect consumers from predatory pricing and ensure the hobby remains affordable and accessible.
