A Future for Soccer in Westmount: Invest in Artificial Field, Lights & Field Upgrades

A Future for Soccer in Westmount: Invest in Artificial Field, Lights & Field Upgrades
The Issue
To the Mayor and Council of the City of Westmount,
To the Director of Culture, Sports, Recreation, and Social Development,
Soccer is one of the fastest-growing and most beloved sports in our community. Every day, children, youth, and families come together on our local fields to stay active, build friendships, and enjoy the beautiful game. However, Westmount’s current soccer facilities are no longer meeting the needs of our growing and passionate community.
Our natural grass fields are overused, often poorly maintained, and lack adequate lighting. These limitations not only restrict playing time and scheduling but also pose safety risks to players of all ages. When fields are unplayable due to weather or wear, youth miss out on valuable opportunities to play, train, and improve.
Meanwhile, neighbouring communities are moving forward. Verdun and Lachine are developing new artificial fields. LaSalle and Pierrefonds have already made significant investments in artificial field infrastructure. Mont-Royal has recently completed upgrades to their facilities. These improvements extend playing seasons, enhance safety, and support young athletes in their ability to develop and progress skill levels. Westmount, by contrast, risks falling behind.
We, the undersigned residents and families of Westmount, respectfully call on the City to prioritize investment in soccer infrastructure by:
• Building a full-sized, modern artificial field to support safe, year-round play and expanded community use;
• Improving the condition and maintenance of existing grass fields to reduce injuries and increase playability;
• Installing appropriate field lighting to allow safe evening practices and matches, especially in spring and fall.
Soccer is more than a sport. It’s a vital part of community life, youth development, and physical well-being. With the right investment, we can build a safer, stronger, and more inclusive future for soccer in Westmount.
Let’s give our young athletes the facilities they deserve.
