A Father's Plea for Change in Ohio

A Father's Plea for Change in Ohio
The Issue
My story is like most other unmarried dads out there. It's the classic tale that many have lived but few truly understand:
Boy meets girl.
They fall in love.
She gets pregnant.
They have a baby.
The relationship ends, and the battle for rights begins.
I quickly realized that after building a life together, I had no parental rights to my child because we were not married. This needs to change. I find myself in a relentless fight to earn the right to be a father to my own daughter. The time, energy, and money that could have been devoted to her cannot be replaced. Dads are parents too, yet in Ohio, it seems we are often overlooked.
Every day feels like an uphill battle, a relentless struggle that seems to have no end in sight. The heartache of not seeing my child, not hearing her laughter, and not being there to comfort her when she needs me most is indescribable. It’s a pain that gnaws at my soul every waking moment, a void that can’t be filled by anything else.
Being a father is more than just a title; it’s a bond that runs deeper than words can express. I’ve been there every step of the way, from the very first cry to the first steps, the first words, and all the milestones in between. I have cherished every giggle, wiped away every tear, and celebrated every victory, no matter how small.
Yet, here I am, forced to prove my worthiness to be a part of my own child’s life. Navigating the legal system feels like walking through a maze with no exit, where every turn presents a new challenge, a new heartache. The laws that should protect the interests of the child often feel like barriers, keeping us apart rather than bringing us together.
This isn't just my fight. It’s a call to action for all those who believe that every parent willing and able to love and care for their child should have the opportunity to do so. It’s about recognizing the irreplaceable role that fathers play in their children’s lives and ensuring that no child is left wondering why one of their parents isn’t there.
Together, we can advocate for fairer laws, for a system that truly considers the best interest of the child, and for a world where no parent has to fight just to be present in their child's life. Let us come together to make this change, not just for my child and me, but for every parent and child who are facing the same struggle.
In Ohio, when a child is born to married parents, both parents automatically have parenting rights. But for unmarried parents, a biological father has no legal rights until he pursues them through the juvenile court. This system needs to change.
Society's outdated laws presume that the mother is the best parent, granting her all rights without question simply because she gave birth. No one asks whether she is truly the best for the child. In my situation, the mother is isolating me from my daughter, and it’s considered acceptable because she is with her mom. She can take our daughter hours away, and I am powerless until the courts recognize me as the father. My name on the birth certificate and the parental affidavit mean nothing.
This is a call for change—not just for my sake, but for all the fathers out there who are desperately trying to be part of their children's lives. Ohio needs to do better. We need to recognize that fathers are just as important, that they too can provide love, stability, and support.
This is not just a legal battle; it's a fight for the hearts and futures of our children. Let's work together to create a world where every parent, married or unmarried, is given equal recognition and opportunity to love and nurture their child.
