A Community Legacy Worth Saving: Support the Fitzgerald Fins Swim Team
The Issue
For over 40 years, the Fitzgerald Fins Swim Team has been more than just a sports program; it has been a cornerstone of our community, fostering camaraderie, perseverance, and a love for swimming in the hearts of our children. Generations of families have found joy, exercise, and lifelong memories at the DLS pool, all while building a legacy of excellence and inclusivity in South Georgia.
But now, that legacy is at risk. The recently announced 2025 DLS budget has excluded funding for pool maintenance, leaving the future of the swim team uncertain. Without immediate action, this beloved program and the opportunities it provides for our children could be lost.
Why It Matters
For those unfamiliar with competitive swimming, it is more than a sport—it's a lifeline for many of our kids. In the scorching South Georgia heat, swimming offers an opportunity to stay active and cool. For some of our children with physical or special needs, the Fins Swim Team is their only chance to participate in athletics. Swimming is unique in its accessibility, allowing everyone to feel included, accomplished, and part of a team.
The Fitzgerald Fins Swim Team has thrived because of strong community support. This program has united families, celebrated victories, and provided an outlet for kids who might not otherwise have a chance to shine.
A Path Forward
We understand the challenges posed by the pool’s condition. Repairs are overdue, and maintenance costs are higher than they should be. However, cutting funding abruptly without offering a transition period threatens to dismantle a program that means so much to so many.
What we’re asking for is reasonable: One more year of funding for the pool's maintenance. This additional time will allow the swim team and its supporters to plan for the future—exploring alternative funding options, potential partnerships, and long-term solutions to keep the program alive.
How You Can Help
We’re calling on our community to rally behind the Fitzgerald Fins Swim Team once again. By signing this petition, you’re not just advocating for a sport; you’re standing up for inclusion, opportunity, and the spirit of togetherness that defines Fitzgerald.
Let’s show the DLS Board that the Fitzgerald Fins Swim Team is worth fighting for. Let’s ensure our kids have the chance to dive into a brighter future—one that continues the legacy of this remarkable team.
Together, we can make waves of change. Will you join us?
