A change to the neglected alleys, for a call for safer pathways!
The Issue
I am writing to appeal my deep concern about the community issue regarding the unfinished and unsafe alleyways in barangay Calaocan, wherein many residents are affected by it, especially to those whose transportation is a two wheel vehicle. As a member of the community and one of those affected residents, I feel that it is a collective responsibility to take action and to demand change.
Our country is now experiencing El Niño, the dry season also known as summer, yet the PAGASA announced on March 26 that the Philippines is likely to experience more tropical cyclones in 2024 than last year due to the potential return of La Niña. Ana Liza Solis, PAGASA's climate monitoring chief, said there is a 62% chance that La Niña will develop during June to August. Therefore, there are a possible 13 to 16 cyclones this year, she added.
According to the study, the rainy season is now expected to begin in the following month, which may cause some alleyways in our barangay to become slippery and muddy. Many locals have expressed concern about it being inaccessible and prone to accidents, particularly those who live in inner areas rather than along the highway. The students who mostly walk are the most affected; some skip classes, while others wear boots due to inaccessibility. Accidents may occur among those who have two wheels. I am one of those who got into an accident in the rainy season last year due to the wet state of the roads. There are also some incidents of accidents that occur today, during the dry season, with people complaining the humpy and rough form of the pathways.
Heavy vehicles such as trucks, tractors, and others also contribute to the condition of the roadways. Especially in our alley, in Zone 2, where our neighborhood's tractor causes deformities such as craters and uneven ground surfaces. As a result, four-wheel vehicles may be unable to pass through it, getting stuck.
Before rainy days come, an initiative should be a must to ensure that a change for betterment will be done. As a student, affected resident and a victim, I am here to suggest a solution on improving the alleyways in our barangay.
Suggestions:
• Community engagement or talking to neighbors and officials about the issue regarding the unfinished and unsafe rough roads.
• Partnering with local groups: local organizations, schools, or youth groups to help in maintaining the alleyways.
• Fundraising efforts or ask for donations for infrastructure improvement of the alleys for safety purposes.
