A call to stop AR 13-025 UMICH vote promoting divisiveness, antisemitism, and bigotry
The Issue
From University of Michigan Alumni:
In late October, the Central Student Government (CSG) of the University of Michigan voted on a few resolutions related to the Israel-Gaza war. They rejected the passage of a hateful petition that demonizes Israel and further targets the Jewish community at the University of Michigan and also voted against a separate petition that calls on our campus community and university leaders to support all students impacted by the ongoing violence in Israel and Gaza. Since CSG did not vote on either petition, both are being presented for a campus-wide referendum see here.
There are numerous perspectives regarding the Middle East, sparking various debates. What is undebatable is that Israel was attacked at 6:30 a.m. on October 7, by Hamas, an Iran-backed terror group controlling Gaza, who launched an unprovoked and vicious surprise attack on over 20 communities in Israel. Over 1000 terrorists infiltrated the Jewish state and murdered around 1,210 innocent people, including 30 Americans, injured over 5,400, committed unspeakable gender-based terror acts on women and children, and took over 240 hostages including Americans to Gaza.
At this very difficult time, having the University of Michigan student body pushing the vote on the AR 13-025 resolution describing Israel as a colonialist, genocidal, and apartheid state while overlooking the tragic events of October 7th is counterproductive. It conveys a narrative suggesting that the Jewish state lacks legitimacy and does not warrant the right to protect its citizens following one of the most brutal pogroms the Jewish people have seen since the Holocaust. In essence, it perpetuates antisemitism and is driving heightened tensions, leading to a distressing rise in incidents, notably impacting Jewish students.
While as Alumni we are profoundly grateful for the continuous and robust support provided by the University of Michigan to the Israeli and Jewish student community. We are calling on the University of Michigan leadership to act and stop the advancement of this resolution vote. Let's prioritize fostering dialogue, understanding, and inclusivity among all students.
