A Call to Action: Shorten the Jumah Khutba
A Call to Action: Shorten the Jumah Khutba
The Issue
May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
As believers, we strive to follow the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who taught us that 'the best of speech is concise and to the point.' With this in mind, we write to express our concern regarding the length of the Friday sermon, Jumah Khutba, at our mosque.
As frequent attendees of the Islamic Center of Alameda, we have noticed that the Khutba often lasts an hour or more, causing frustration and inconvenience to many congregation members. We believe that the excessively long Khutbas can be physically and mentally exhausting, making it harder for people to benefit from the spiritual experience of Jummah and potentially causing them to avoid attending in the future. Moreover, Jummah is an important time for the Muslim community to come together, and excessively long Khutbas can make the experience less welcoming and inclusive for those who may be less familiar with the practices and teachings of Islam. Finally, the Khutba is meant to be an uplifting and inspiring experience, but when it is long, it can become repetitive and lose its impact. Therefore, we believe that the long Khutba is counterproductive to the core purpose of Jummah.
Research shows that shorter Khutbas can be just as effective in conveying the message while allowing the congregation to focus better and retain the information more effectively. Therefore, we request that the mosque administration consider implementing a shorter Khutba of no more than 15-20 minutes, followed by a 10-minute prayer.
This change will benefit the entire congregation and help foster a more positive and inclusive community environment. We invite you to sign our petition to support this change.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. May Allah reward you with goodness.
Sincerely,
Faisal, Hussam, and Kareem.
