A Call to Action for the Prioritization of Suicide Prevention Funding in the United States
The Issue
Every day, so many of us quietly battle an unseen struggle, but despite the overwhelming darkness, we choose to stay for one more day…one. more. day. This one single decision has the power to affect so many lives outside of our own, shedding light onto the importance of enhancing Psychiatric and Mental & Behavioral Health resources and support systems across our Nation. Mental Health awareness isn’t just a trend—it's a necessary and urgent call to action which can save lives. Not only is this of medical and psychiatric significance, it’s also an ethical obligation we have to individuals & their loved ones, as well as to the dedicated Treatment Providers, Psychiatric & Medical Doctors, Behavioral Health Technicians, Mental Health Clinicians, and all of the many community agencies and professional teams that work together to serve those in crisis.
For just a moment, imagine that regardless of one’s status or life dynamics, everybody has access to the help in which they need…To live in such a world, means that increasing Federal and State funding for Suicide Prevention Programs is paramount- more support for hotlines, more community outreach, more education, more research, greater access to Psychiatric Inpatient facilities, more accessible options for therapy, and more affordable psychiatric/medical & pharmacological interventions for those who are suffering in silence.
Suicidal ideation and death by suicide is a concern that extends far beyond individuals experiencing a mental health or psychiatric crisis- this issue also impacts those who serve the community. Essential providers are also at risk due to the stigma associated with seeking their own support despite their chronic exposure to vicarious trauma that is compounded with the emotionally taxing pressure to do more with less- they are placed under immense stress due to increased service demands in conjunction with financial deficits. More importantly, they lack critical funding to adequately serve those in need. The gap between funding and accessibility to services within an increasingly unwell population, is growing and proving detrimental to society. Strengthening these resources will: enforce the destigmatization of suicidality, increase research into Evidenced-Based Practices, provide direct support to professionals, and foster low-barrier treatment options, so no one feels lost. When making that one critical decision to stay another day, individuals will know that help is one simple phone call away.
In the spirit of Suicide Prevention Month, let's commit to creating a safer and more understanding environment, for all. Our emotional and mental state is a critical component of our overall well-being; investing in more resources will build stronger, healthier communities. Our voices can push for substantial policy changes that prioritize Mental Health funding, both locally and nationally.
Join me in urging our representatives to create and pass legislation that significantly increases funding for suicide prevention initiatives in the United States. Together, we can bring about meaningful change and provide hope for those who feel it slipping away. I invite you to sign this petition and join a movement that proves every person truly matters and belongs in this world, empowering all of us to stay another day.
