My name is Emma Hurst, and I write to you as a Member of Parliament for the Animal Justice Party in the NSW Upper House.
I am pleased to support this petition and commend Kylie Bailey for her extraordinary courage in bringing this issue to public attention. Since first meeting with Kylie, I have been proud to support her campaign for Caitlin’s law. I was honoured to table this petition in the NSW Parliament and move a parliamentary motion calling for the introduction of Caitlin's Law.
I am hopeful that Kylie's extraordinary advocacy has already achieved something significant: broad support for Caitlin's Law across the political spectrum.
In recent weeks, Kylie has secured meetings with senior decision-makers, including the Attorney General, and has received encouraging responses from members of different political parties. The Premier has publicly indicated support for reform, and members from across Parliament have recognised the need to address this gap in the law.
That growing consensus is a testament to the strength of Kylie's campaign, your support for the campaign, and the undeniable merit of the reform she is seeking. While there is still work to do, I am optimistic that Caitlin's Law will become a reality.
The Animal Justice Party supports Caitlin’s Law, and I will continue to work with Kylie to ensure that her and Caitlin’s story is heard by all sides of Parliament, until we see the reforms needed to fix this loophole.
To everyone who has signed this petition – thank you. Your advocacy is powerful. I will continue to listen and speak up for women and children in NSW Parliament, and assure you that I will do everything in my power to ensure this law passes.
Sincerely,
Emma Hurst MLC
