A Call for Unity: Petition for the Annexation of the States of New England and New York to Canada

We, the people of New England and New York, seek a new beginning with Canada, because we stand at a crossroads, not just our policies and principles, but our morals, and the collective spirit of humanity that defines us. We feel abandoned in a nation we once prided on compassion and progress, but our bonds with our government have frayed. This union no longer represents nor supports our values and hopes. Each day we watch with heavy hearts as the institutions meant to safeguard our wellbeing and secure our children’s futures are being systematically dismantled. Our healthcare system, once a beacon of hope and healing, is now under siege, leaving millions in fear of sickness and diseases our country’s currently fighting, like measles and cancer. The seeds of misinformation have taken root, as anti-vaccination rhetoric threatens public health and the well-being of our most vulnerable.

Moreover, our leadership has turned its back on the global stage, abandoning our commitments to global stability and peace. The decision to leave NATO, a cornerstone of international security and cooperation, marks a stark deviation from our long-standing values of mutual defense and democratic society. This reckless abandonment threatens not only our relationships with longstanding allies, but also the very fabric of international order.

At a time when the world desperately needs unity to address the escalating crisis of climate change – a threat that transcends borders and affects everyone – our nation has chosen isolation over collaboration. Our withdrawal from global climate agreements and refusal to engage in meaningful environmental initiatives reveal a disturbing disregard for the catastrophic consequences facing our planet.

Simultaneously, our government has inexplicably chosen to turn its back on Ukraine, an ally fighting for its democracy and sovereignty, while seeking closer ties with Russia – a nation hellbent on challenging principles of freedom and self-determination but is also among the world’s largest polluters, showing absolutely no regard for global climate efforts. This pivot towards autocracy and environmental neglect further alienates us from our allies and undermines the moral and ethical principles upon which our nation was built. They have dismissed nearly 10,000 essential government workers, many of which they have tried to call back because of “mistakes”. They are crippling our ability to deliver basic services and respond to national emergencies, further eroding public trust and governmental efficacy. These are not just numbers but lives that have been disrupted and communities left vulnerable due to lack of foresight and compassion. In an additional blow, our economic stability hangs in the wind. The imposition of tariffs has not only inflamed trade tensions but increased everything across the board for everyday Americans.

Each of these actions, taken individually, would be cause for concern but together, they signify a profound departure from the principles of equity, justice, and responsibility that we hold dear. Our current path is not only unsustainable but deeply unjust. We seek not just a new administration but a new alignment with a nation that reflects our values and aspirations. Canada’s commitment to fostering economic fairness, environmental responsibility, and global cooperation aligns with the vision we cherish for our future – a future where policies are crafted not just for the few but for the many, ensuring prosperity and protection for all citizens. To a new beginning with Canada, a country we admire for its commitment to health, education, environmental stewardship, and the rights of its people. Therefore: We, the undersigned, advocate for annexing the states of New England and New York to Canada. This proposal is rooted in historical ties, shared values, and the pursuit of a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable future for the residents of these states through annexation to Canada.

These states share deep historical, cultural, and economic connections with Canada. From early colonial times to contemporary trade relationships, the regions are intertwined in numerous ways. As we face global challenges such as climate change, healthcare access, and economic instability, it is imperative to explore solutions that prioritize the well-being of our communities.

These seven states have been viewed as a cradle of American democracy and revolutionary thought. This historical context contributes to a sense of pride among its residents, who often identify more with their regional heritage than with national identity. The NEIC leaders express feelings that the current political climate does not reflect the ideals they associate with their region’s past, leading to a desire for a political entity that aligns more closely with their values. Joining Canada would give us this.

Moreover, these states repeatedly exhibit higher voting rates for social progressiveness, environmental responsibility, and equality. In recent years, Massachusetts and Connecticut were ranked among the top five states for LGBT rights by the Human Rights Campaign [source: Human Rights Campaign's State Equality Index], illustrating a commitment to human rights that aligns more closely with Canada and international standards than much of the United States.

The annexation of these seven states to Canada could bring many gains. Between these 7 states, we offer a GDP of 3 trillion, access to many natural resources, cultural enrichment, increased representation in international matters, increased work opportunities and population, enhanced infrastructure, more strategic positioning over US, a massive boost in Tourism, and the possibility of strengthened ties to the US trade. We can offer higher tax revenue, to be invested in public services and infrastructure. Enhanced innovation between tech and finance sectors, and our innovation in healthcare areas can add to Canada's as well.

We can also add to border security and defense for Canada. Our states offer a critical area for strategic coastal defense and naval operations. Several military installations already exist in these states, which can be leveraged for training and operations, and by these states hosting defense contractors and manufacturers, we can contribute military equipment, supplies, and tech. Our academic institutions are leaders in research and technology development, and we can contribute to defense technologies, cybersecurity, and engineering. The potential federal tax contributions from the states of New England and New York could significantly bolster Canada’s economy, providing resources for various public services and infrastructure projects. This annexation could create a more integrated and prosperous region, benefiting both Canadian citizens and the residents of the annexed states.

For these seven states, we would gain much from Canada. We would enjoy reduced tariffs, streamlined trade regulations, and access to Canadian markets, which would only boost local industry and economy. Canada's universal healthcare would provide better insurance and health outcomes rates, and with our states, we could be top innovators in healthcare. Education would only have improvements as well, and our education is something we aim to better daily. Canada's infrastructure could bring improved public transport, roads, and utilities in the region. Our job market would become more diverse with the addition of Canada's market. Civic engagement and representation on issues would be greater in Canada. Our need for a sustainable environment will only be met by open arms in Canada, allowing us to work towards a greener future. We would easily align with inclusivity, multiculturalism, and social justice. Not to mention, Canada is a much safer country, which we would greatly benefit from, as well as their political stability.

Understandably, there will need to be negotiations and treaties for these seven states to obtain guarantees for entitlements like social security benefits, housing and food assistance programs, (etc.) to be transferred with us. This can be done through evaluation, reciprocal agreements, or even full integration into Canadian programs, like CPP and provincial healthcare programs. Successfully doing this will lead to a more robust social welfare system for all residents involved.

U.S. (Medicaid): Provides limited coverage for low-income individuals, with variability in benefits and eligibility across states.

Canada (Medicare): Offers universal coverages for all residents, ensuring access to essential medical services without out-of-pocket costs.

Access and Coverage: Canada tends to have more comprehensive coverage in healthcare and social assistance, while U.S. programs can be more fragmented and vary significantly by state.

Child Benefits:

U.S. (Child Tax Credit): Provides a tax credit to families based on income, but it can be limited and is not universally accessible.

Canada (Canada Child Benefit): A universal monthly payment that provides financial support to families with children, adjusted based on income.

U.S.: The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows for unpaid leave, but many states offer limited paid leave options.

Canada: Offers up to 18 months of paid parental leave, significantly supporting new parents.

Public Transportation:

U.S.: Public transportation varies widely by city and state, often underfunded and inadequate in rural areas.

Canada: Many cities have well-developed public transit systems that are heavily subsidized.

Food Security:

U.S. (SNAP): Provides food assistance based on income, but eligibility can be restrictive, and benefits are often insufficient.

Canada (Nutrition North Canada): Focuses on improving food access in remote areas while providing various food security initiatives.

Housing Security:

U.S. (Section 8, Public Housing): Limited funding and long waiting lists often leave many without adequate housing support.

Canada (National Housing Strategy): Comprehensive policies aimed at increasing the supply of affordable housing and reducing homelessness.

Mental Health Services:

U.S.: Mental health services are often lacking continuity and underfunded, leading to gaps in care.

Canada: Mental health is integrated into the healthcare system, with various public programs aimed at supporting mental health.

Unemployment/Employment Benefits:

U.S. (UI Benefits): Varies by state, often providing limited support with strict eligibility criteria.

Canada (Employment Insurance): Offers broader support and more accessible benefits for unemployed workers.

We call on all who share this vision of a compassionate and progressive community to join us. Let us unite not out of malice or disdain but out of love and hope for our future. This is more than a petition; it is a plea for understanding, a cry for empathy, and a call to action for all who dream of a better tomorrow. We ask you to listen, not just to the words being said, but to the message our hearts send.

Together, we can turn a page and begin anew. We ask for your support, your voice, and your heart as we reach out to our neighbors in Canada with open arms and hopeful spirits. Let us show the world that when faced with adversity, we choose unity, we choose compassion, and above all, we choose a shared and thriving future.

We urge policymakers and community leaders to consider this proposal seriously, recognizing the mutual benefits it presents for all parties involved.
