A Call for Justice, Accountability, and Compassionate Action in Port Hardy

The Issue

Born and raised in Corner Brook NL But have been all over Canada and have lived in Port Hardy for good many years of that Part living in Port Hardy, I have experienced first-hand the devastating impact of medical malpractice in the mental health sector, specifically, a scheme that has caused me enormous suffering for over three years. My personal journey, marred by lawsuits against two doctors from the Port Hardy hospital, has driven home the urgent need for improved patient protection.

The negligence I experienced aggravates my already precarious mental health, stripping away my ability to engage in daily activities out of fear for my physical well-being. No longer can I participate in sports without the crutch of an inhaler, or my Leg brace and Wheel chair a testament to the physical and emotional toll that has descended upon me through gross medical misconduct.

I echo the voice of millions around the world who endure medical malpractice leading to severe damages in their lives. This is a systemic issue: a cancer that has not only threatened my livelihood, but that of countless others, both seen and unseen. The status quo is untenable, and we must call upon our government to address these disconcerting realities.

It is time to illuminate the stark reality of medical malpractice that is interwoven into our mental health system. We implore legislators to implement rigorous laws and overhaul current medical practice oversight mechanisms. It's critical to ensure the culpability of every health practitioner, especially when their negligence compromises the very essence of an individual's dignity and way of life.

Help instigate this urgent change and assert a future where no other individual has to suffer the way I and so many others have. Sign this petition and urge our government to take immediate action against medical malpractice in the mental health sector.

A Call for Justice, Accountability, and Compassionate Action in Port Hardy: A Petition for Change and Healing

To the residents of Port Hardy, the Government of British Columbia, and all those who care about justice, accountability, and the mental health of our community:

My name is Brent Dempsey, and I am a proud member of the Port Hardy community. I am writing this petition to you not only as a survivor of medical malpractice but also as someone who has experienced firsthand the mental health consequences of those failures. For over three years, I have fought tirelessly for justice in the face of personal tragedy, trauma, and suffering. But I am not just fighting for myself—I am fighting for all of us. I am fighting for the future of our community and for the resources we need to prevent these failures from continuing.

The Malpractice That Nearly Took My Life

Three years ago, I walked into Port Hardy Hospital with symptoms that would later be identified as a pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening condition. Instead of receiving the urgent care I needed, I was dismissed by two doctors who told me to go home and rest. They failed to recognize the seriousness of my condition. Only hours later, my lung collapsed, leading to a hemorrhage. I was rushed to another hospital, 40 minutes away, where I endured a life-saving surgery while awake, terrified and in excruciating pain.

I nearly died that day, but I survived. Unfortunately, my physical recovery does not tell the whole story. The mental health impacts of that traumatic experience have been profound and long-lasting. I still suffer from PTSD, anxiety, panic attacks, and depression as a direct result of the negligence I endured.

The Mental Health Crisis: The Consequences of Medical Malpractice and Neglect

What happened to me is not just a physical injury—it is a mental health crisis. The trauma, fear, and sense of betrayal I felt have left scars that cannot be seen but are no less real. For years, I have struggled with the emotional aftermath of my near-death experience. This struggle is compounded by the frustration and helplessness that comes with knowing that the doctors and hospitals involved failed me, and that I was not the only one affected. I know that many people in our community are dealing with similar trauma, whether from medical malpractice, personal loss, or other mental health challenges.

The effects of trauma are not just personal—they reverberate throughout our families, our communities, and our society. We cannot continue to ignore the toll that this takes on individuals and families. The mental health impact of malpractice cannot be understated. People like me are left to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, often without the support or resources they need to heal.

Fighting for Accountability: A Call to Action for Port Hardy and Beyond

This petition is not just about me; it is about all of us. I am asking for your support in demanding accountability from the healthcare system in Port Hardy. For too long, these failures have been swept under the rug, and people have been left to suffer in silence. This is not acceptable. It is time for us to stand together and demand that those responsible for medical negligence be held accountable. We must also call for a change in the way healthcare is provided in Port Hardy, ensuring that the proper resources, equipment, and training are in place to prevent this from happening again.

But accountability alone is not enough. We need to ensure that those affected by malpractice and trauma, like myself, have access to the mental health resources and support they desperately need. I am committed to making a difference in our community. I am already offering mental health coaching services through my program, "Trauma to Hope," to help those dealing with PTSD, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and other trauma-related issues. My coaching services are available 24/7, and I urge anyone in need to reach out.

I believe in the power of healing, and I am dedicated to walking alongside you on your journey to recovery.

A Call to the Government: Support for Mental Health and Healthcare Reform

I am also calling on the government to step up and provide better mental health resources, especially for those who have experienced medical malpractice and other forms of trauma. The lack of support for mental health care is a national crisis, and it is time for action. The people of Port Hardy—and all Canadians—deserve better. We deserve access to high-quality mental health services, trauma recovery programs, and healthcare that is safe, effective, and compassionate.

It is time for the government to take real action and invest in the mental health and well-being of Canadians. We need better policies, better funding, and better training for healthcare professionals. The status quo is no longer acceptable.

Port Hardy: A Community United for Change

Port Hardy is a small, close-knit community, and we pride ourselves on looking out for one another. But for far too long, we have seen our neighbors suffer in silence. Whether it is due to medical malpractice, mental health struggles, or any other challenge, we must come together and support one another. This petition is a call to action for all of us. We must stand united and demand the change we so desperately need.

I ask that you sign this petition to show your support for those who have been affected by medical malpractice and trauma. Let us raise our voices together and demand that accountability, compassion, and justice be brought to the forefront of healthcare in Port Hardy. Together, we can make sure that this never happens again.

The Systemic Issue: A Broader Perspective

We are facing systemic issues in the healthcare system that contribute to this ongoing problem. From underfunding to understaffing, from inadequate training to outdated equipment, the system is failing us. These issues are not just happening in Port Hardy—they are happening across the country. But we cannot sit idly by and wait for change to happen on its own. We need to be the change.

Proposed Solutions and Call to Action

While accountability is important, it is not enough. We need to ensure that those affected by malpractice and trauma have access to the mental health resources they need to heal. The government must take action to support trauma recovery programs, provide better mental health services, and invest in our healthcare system. We need to address the root causes of the problem, from the lack of resources in our hospitals to the need for better training for medical professionals.

I am committed to making a difference in our community. Through my mental health coaching program, "Trauma to Hope," I am already offering services to those who are dealing with PTSD, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and other trauma-related issues. But this is only a small part of the larger picture. We need to provide comprehensive support to everyone who has been affected by medical malpractice and other forms of trauma.

I urge the government and healthcare institutions to take immediate action to ensure that no one else in our community has to experience what I went through. This is a call to action for better training, better resources, and better care for those in need.

Advocacy for Community Support

Our community can be a powerful force for change. But to make that change happen, we must come together and support each other. Mental health struggles are often silent, and many people are suffering in silence. We must break the stigma surrounding mental illness and trauma and create a culture of support and healing.

I believe that Port Hardy can be a model for how small communities can rise up and demand better care for their residents. We can create support groups for people dealing with trauma, provide resources for those affected by medical malpractice, and build a network of care that allows everyone to heal.

Reaching Out for Public Support
I am asking for your help. If you have experienced medical malpractice, mental health challenges, or trauma, I want to hear your story. Your voice matters. I invite you to join me in this fight for justice and healing. Together, we can demand better care, more resources, and greater support for our community.

Please sign this petition and share it with your friends, family, and community members. Let’s raise our voices together and make sure that our leaders hear us. We must demand change and accountability. Together, we can ensure that what happened to me never happens to anyone else.

The Importance of Education and Awareness
It is essential that we educate future generations on the importance of mental health and the consequences of medical negligence. I urge our schools, community centers, and healthcare professionals to provide education on trauma, mental health, and the importance of seeking help when needed. We must work together to create a supportive environment where everyone feels safe to talk about their struggles and seek help.

Final Emotional Plea

This petition is more than just a plea for justice. It is a call for healing, for accountability, and for change. What happened to me was a tragedy, but it is not just my story—it is the story of countless others who have suffered in silence. I refuse to let this continue. We can do better. We must do better.

I am committed to making sure that no one else has to go through the pain, fear, and trauma that I have experienced. But I need your help. Join me in this fight. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can bring hope, healing, and justice to Port Hardy.
