The Issue

To the Government of Canada and Members of Parliament:
Whereas:

  • Wildfires are becoming an increasingly serious threat to Canadians, our communities, our forests, our economy, and our environment;
  • The devastating wildfire situation across Canada, particularly in British Columbia, demonstrates the urgent need for stronger national preparedness and coordination;
  • Millions of hectares have been affected by wildfires across Canada, resulting in evacuations, economic disruption, environmental damage, and significant public safety concerns;
  • Firefighters, emergency personnel, volunteers, and international partners from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico have provided invaluable assistance in protecting Canadian communities during wildfire emergencies;
  • Canada possesses significant expertise, technology, resources, and emergency-response capabilities that could be better coordinated and utilized to address growing wildfire risks;
  • The Canadian Armed Forces have demonstrated their ability to assist Canadians during major wildfire emergencies through aviation, transportation, engineering, logistics, communications, and emergency-response support;
  • Greater emphasis should be placed on prevention and early detection rather than relying primarily on wildfire suppression after fires have already become uncontrollable;
  • Advances in artificial intelligence, thermal sensing, satellite imagery, drones, infrared technologies, predictive analytics, and real-time communications systems create new opportunities to significantly improve wildfire preparedness and response;
  • Wildfires are not solely a firefighting issue but also a matter of public safety, environmental stewardship, economic resilience, infrastructure protection, and community wellbeing.

Therefore, We, the Undersigned, Call Upon the Government of Canada to:

  1. Develop and implement a comprehensive national wildfire strategy focused on prevention, early detection, rapid response, and coordination among federal, provincial, territorial, Indigenous, and municipal partners.
  2. Examine the establishment of a Canadian Armed Forces-supported national wildfire response capability, working alongside provincial wildfire agencies, Indigenous communities, municipalities, and professional firefighting organizations.
  3. Expand Canada's early detection and prevention capabilities, including the deployment and integration of
  • AI-powered thermal sensors and monitoring cameras in high-risk forest regions;
  •  Satellite imagery, drones, and infrared technologies for continuous monitoring;
  •  Artificial intelligence systems capable of analyzing weather, drought, vegetation, wind, and lightning data to identify elevated wildfire risks;
  • Automated alert systems that can notify emergency responders immediately when potential ignition points are detected; and
  • A national real-time wildfire coordination platform connecting federal, provincial, Indigenous, and municipal authorities.

      4. Increase investment in wildfire prevention and preparedness initiatives, recognizing that preventing and detecting fires early is significantly more effective and less costly than responding to large-scale wildfire disasters.

       5. Review how military and other federal resources can be utilized more effectively to protect Canadians during severe wildfire seasons, while maintaining Canada's broader national security responsibilities.

We Believe:

Canada has the people, technology, expertise, and resources necessary to become a world leader in wildfire prevention and response. What is needed now is stronger national coordination, sustained investment, and a sense of urgency equal to the scale of the challenge.

We respectfully urge the Government of Canada to make wildfire prevention, early detection, rapid response, and coordinated national preparedness a priority for the safety and future of all Canadians.
