Good morning. Speaking up works. Let’s take a minute to realize that civil engagement gets results. We love New Orleans and our neighbors. We’ve stood up for ourselves. These meetings are a first step … we need to do more … more signatures mean more voices …. Together we are doing great. Let’s keep up the good work … Yes. Meetings are happening. This coming week both the Superintendent of NOPD and the Dist Attorney will publicly testify at city council. You can attend via zoom. Link here : https://council.nola.gov/home/
Your New Orleans Safe petition started the conversation. New Orleans Safe has communicated with the at large council members. We are waiting for their acknowledgement. They are aware. The plan is to continue to put our wishes for manpower and presence on the streets first and foremost - however this can happen. But it can’t happen fast enough. Of course there is chatter to bring in post-certified staff from the University systems, Sherriff’s dept, ( short staffed) , Levee Police and other entities. But why dig the hole deeper city-wide? Did you read that the Juvenile Center is shot 50% staff. That’s where the carjackers and murderer escaped overpowering one guard. We can’t go this direction - it’s the wrong turn.
The Louisiana National Guard is needed now. Your request is completely reasonable. When someone asks how we would pay them … it would be the same way we’d pay 500 more police officers or duty officers from Xavier, Loyola or Tulane . And the Guard can be deployed immediately. Step one solved. More manpower without delay.
on another note … The Metropolitan Crime Commission is doing weekly crime updates. It’s more fuel for the fire of public sentiment that more manpower is needed on the streets of New Orleans. link below … https://metrocrime.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Orleans-Parish-2019-2022-Crime-Trends-Maps_1.16.2022-1.pdf
You are a leader in requesting action from our elected leaders. A movement demanding immediate action for a safe community for all. If crime is trending up nationally we need to be the exception in New Orleans. We March to a different beat. And, that’s the number to be a part of…. New Orleans Safe.
