NHS England are currently deliberating over a public consultation exercise on a draft policy for Eculizumab with DDD patients. We have participated fully in the exercise and highlighted some errors and many areas for improvement. Now we must wait and hope. In the meanwhile though I'd like to bring to your attention another issue which has a major effect on Matty and up 1.8M other UK citizens with chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD patients are unable to control their Potassium levels properly and unfortunately this can cause heart failure and ultimately death. The best way to control Potassium levels is through diet but under current legislation there is no requirement for companies to include Potassium levels on food labels. This means it is very difficult to monitor how much Potassium is in the diet of a CKD patient with all the consequent risks. How many people does this affect? You may be surprised to hear that In England in 2008/09 there were 1,739,443 people aged 18 and over who were registered with CKD (stages 3-5). According to NHS figures around 9% of the English adult population are estimated to have Chronic Kidney Disease between stage 3 and 5. We have started a petition on parliament.uk to ask the government to change legislation to force food companies to add Potassium to the list of required nutrition. If we can get 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament. We have done this on parliament.uk to force a debate in the House, but many thanks to Change.Org for the support they have provided to our campaign to date and in the future.
