This Friday, all our Energy Ministers – state, territory and federal – are meeting to discuss the future of climate and energy policy in Australia. Friday’s also forecast to be a day of catastrophic bush fires.

This is their first meeting for the year, after months of stalling from federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor.

We’re deeply concerned about what Minister Taylor will do in the meeting to further block climate action and Australia’s transition to clean energy.

Taylor’s trying to change Australia’s energy rules to lock in decades more coal and gas. He’s also pushing for even more climate-destroying projects – like the Browse Basin gas field in WA, which would be four times worse than Adani.

State and territory Energy Ministers have the power to stand up to Taylor and demand climate action – but they need loud encouragement from the people they represent.

In the absence of federal climate leadership, most Australian states and territories have reasonably good clean energy targets. In fact, they’ve all committed to net zero climate pollution in the next few decades.

But Taylor and the Morrison Government – beholden to the fossil fuel lobby – want to keep Australia burning coal and gas. We believe they’ll do everything they can to lock climate-wrecking fuels into our energy future.

It’s unthinkable.

With bush fires already raging across the country and meteorologists forecasting ever-more catastrophic conditions, our leaders should be focusing on how to rapidly shift away from climate-wrecking fuels – not how to keep them burning. There are so many incredible opportunities to ramp up renewable's, if only Taylor would stop blocking them.

State and territory Energy Ministers have the power to push back on the Morrison Government’s climate-wrecking agenda. Together let’s ask them to stand strong!

Our energy future runs on sunshine, wind and water, not climate-wrecking coal or gas.

We have the solutions – so let’s get on with it.
