4 Day School Weeks
4 Day School Weeks
The Issue
As a 14 year old boy, I think I speak for a lot of people , even adults, when I say, “There’s a lot of things I’d rather be doing than going to school.” Many people know the absurd acronyms that some people come up with for school, math, etc..
With 4 day school weeks, kids would be able to relax more and have less stress to be able to focus on school. Of course there’s gonna be people who still will complain and wish for 3 day school weeks, but nobody can completely stop people from complaining.
If school was 8 hours from Monday through Thursday, not including winter or spring break, that’s 32 hours of school a week, or 288 hours in the school year, from September through May. And that doesn’t include schoolwork or extracurricular activities. High School students average 1.5 to 2.5 hours of schoolwork per night and average 5 to 10 hours of extracurricular activities per week.
This will also provide more time for jobs, which most people first get jobs from ages 14 to 22, depending on the type and hours. If teens want money, which is basically necessary, they usually need to get that money from a job. I f they don’t have time however, they won’t have money for food, a car or gas, college, clothing, etc..
Many people might have asked, “When are we ever going to use algebra or biology in our lives.” My teachers always responded, “You won’t, but this teaches you how to be still and quiet when you have to be.” After that, I always wonder, “Then why don’t we learn to do that in a class that will actually help us in life?”
Take money management for example. Has school ever tried to teach anyone about how to save money, what to and not to spend it on? Many teens, especially ones who go into college, go deep into debt, and it can be very hard recovering from it. Many college students often work 3 jobs at once just to sustain themselves with basic necessities.
There are many other classes like this, such as culinary. Most teens go into living by themselves without knowing how to cook proper meals, and going out to eat or eating junk food for every meal. Others may include finances, politics/government.
