Petition comment from SDHS Staff/Volunteer - Will SDHS Ever Take Responsibility and Tell The Truth?
According to this statement, owner surrenders were also called to send on the trip so SDHS would have been funded for those intakes and instead of caring for them sent them off into harm's way.
Statement
"Demand answers, don’t let this die down. SDHS has not said a word to their employees or volunteers about this for weeks. They are hoping it goes away with time. I want SDHS to change for the better but so far they’ve only silenced and brushed off people’s concerns and feelings. Those were OUR animals, not CEO Gary Weitzman’s or COO Jessica D.’s or any of senior leaderships. I personally raised the Guinea pig babies and small pets and cared for them with so many other caregivers and volunteers for years. We asked why they would put day old Guinea pigs on that transport a week before and on the day of the transport, and were told if someone wants all our small pets, then we’re going to send them all. Why pull small pets from foster homes that LOVED those animals and send them out? Why call owner surrenders and tell them to come in early so their animals could be on that transport? Why would they put a mom and her 2 Guinea pig babies in a tiny carrier together with no space. Why 300 animals.
They haven’t answered one of these questions truthfully. Their first lie was saying they sent them out “fear free”, and they lied straight to the public and employees and volunteers days after the transport. Only the few who were there that day know the truth, and they’re relying on those people to stay silent about it. Senior leadership has said that all animal transports “don’t look pretty”, but that’s not a good enough excuse. SDHS could do so much better in this, but have let down and broke trust in the animal care community. We want answers, an apology, a guarantee that this won’t happen again and they will do better by the animals that WE raise for days, months, years. Dogs, cats, and all small pets deserve better. They have the money to make sure they do better".
