We the petitioners demand proof of life, we respectfully request Mayor Regina Romero, City Councilman Kevin Dahl and City Manager Michael Ortega honor their responsibilities and oversee the Humane Society of Southern Arizona’s unethical practices. We ask for full accountability of the 250 missing animals and that the safety and wellbeing of the missing animals be a priority of these administrations.
How can the HSSA’s mission be honored to enforce animal protection laws, prevent animal cruelty and suffering and provide humane care for all relinquished animals if it’s own CEO Steve Farley is guilty of hiding 250 unaccounted animals entrusted in his care?
When the animals arrived from SDHS at HSSA under the authority of Steve Farley, Christian Gonzalez, Chief Programs Officer (A python breeder and reptile rescuer) immediately transported all of the small “prey” animals directly to a “private rescue” in the middle of the night.
The animals have been unaccounted for since; this is a red flag, a valid conflict of interest and unacceptable.
Further, CEO Steve Farley should be removed from his position, his unethical behavior and lack of honesty with the San Diego Humane Society is clearly not in the best interest of the animals and he has since refused to have full accountability for his own actions even with legal notices from the SDHS.
Animal shelters are funded by a variety of sources, both private and public and have a moral responsibility to the public/supporters with transparency and to answer questions and concerns about the animals in their care.
A humane shelter should be a safe haven for all animals in its care and have a development of humane principles for the community it is serving; neither appears to be happening.
