The citizens of Surprise, Arizona, deserve better when it comes to public safety and the ability to travel freely and securely through our community.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), major improvements to U.S. Highway 60 and Loop 303 are not scheduled to begin until 2028, with completion projected as late as 2033. This timeline is unacceptable given current conditions.

This corridor is located in the fastest-growing area of Maricopa County. Traffic congestion has increased dramatically, and it is no longer unusual to experience major accidents daily for weeks at a time. Tragically, numerous fatalities have occurred at and around this interchange. These are not isolated incidents—they are a clear and ongoing public safety crisis.

The City of Surprise has done everything within its authority to address this issue. Local leadership has advocated, planned, and partnered where possible. At this point, further progress depends on state and federal action.

We are therefore calling on the Arizona State Legislature and our federal elected officials to take immediate action to accelerate the timeline for improvements to U.S. 60 and Loop 303. Waiting until 2028 to begin construction—and until 2033 to finish—puts lives at risk every single day.

Infrastructure should keep pace with growth. Our residents should not have to fear for their safety simply to commute to work, take their children to school, or travel within their own city.

We respectfully demand that this project be prioritized and fast-tracked before more lives are lost.

Sincerely,
The Citizens of Surprise, Arizona
