Petition updateBan the use of wild animals in circusesSeeing is believing. Elephants survived road crash, now confronted with fire

In the morning of July 21st a fire started at Italian circus Circo Moira Orfei while in Porto San Giorgio, Italy. The circus programme currently includes a performance with the 4 elephants that were involved in a road crash in Spain last April. Luckily this new incident ended with no deaths of people or animals, unlike the accident in Spain, which did take the life of one elephant.
However, this is a new reminder of the serious risk involved in the use of wild animals in circuses for public safety and for the animals. In this case, the elephants presumably had to be transported by road through Spain, the south of France and a large part of northern Italy, once more unnecessarily compromising road safety.
Yet another reason for the European Union to ban circuses with wild animals..
The fire at Circo Moria Orfei is the last in a long series of incidents involving this circus and others linked to the same family. Incidents include tragedies – the attack of a tiger to the circus trainers resulting in serious injuries to one of them, or the death of a giraffe after escaping the circus – other tragicomic events – the circus facing legal charges for passing off made-up dogs as panda bears - and the usual cases of escapes of all type of animals, including elephants and hippos, that sadly have become a regular occurrence.
Almost 600.000 people like you have already signed our petition to the European Commission, but we still aim for a million voices against wild animals in circuses.
