1 Nuke Could Destroy Your City. 12,500 Could Destroy Civilization. It's Time to Disarm.
The Issue
1. The Recap
In the 50s and 60s, nuclear weapons were an appearent threat, just a hair trigger away from a global wasteland. Stockpiling meant power and power meant fear, and fear they had. Everyone was afraid of nuclear weapons killing us all at any given time, and in the 70s and 80s, the number of nuclear weapons peaked, reaching over 70,000 warheads in 1986. But people got together, millions protested (such as the nuclear disarmament rally in 1982, New York, the largest singular protest in history). This protest aided in the first ever banning of an entire category of nuclear weapons, a treaty known as the INF.
2. The Problem
But today, things are different now. The threat of annihilation seems to have gotten... worse over the years. In fact, it seems to be worse in some ways than the cold war. With the recent tensions between Russia and Ukraine (2022), Israel and Gaza (2024), and now Israel and Iran (2025), it seems like WW3 is on a mere hair trigger. Well that's because it is. 2 old men, control 90% of the world's thermonuclear weapon supply, ranging from 90 kt - 1.2 mt, enough to kill millions with a single blast. And all it takes is a hacker, rage outburst, error, or "screw it" for the world to go to hell.
3. How it affects you
You see that image I uploaded? That's NYC, using realistic blast models, I simulated an 800 kt nuclear warhead (@ https://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/ use a 200 m airburst for realistic results), and the causulaties measured over a million people. With 1 bomb. Now imagine 12,500 of these, 1 maybe hitting your city, your family, your livelihood. And if you don't get caught in the fireball, you'll either get serious injuries by the fireball, thermal wave, or radiation sickness, which you'll then die from anyways.
4. What we can do about it
But it's not hopeless. We cut the global nuke supply into a 6th of what it was before, and we can do it again. But it won't be easy. We need to get loud about it, because the system thrives off of our ignorance. And we must also call for transparency, because they'll do anything they can to hide their nukes from us to make us happy. But if we don't act, it's not if we get into nuclear war, it's when.
