קודם כל, קצת רקע:

השחמט ברחוב לונץ הוא המקום שבו היפ הופ ירושלמי מתרחש מאז 1985. אמסיז, די-ג'ייז, מתופפים, גיטריסטים, בי-בויז, בי-גירלז, גרפיטי-רייטרים, פופרים, לוקרים, קראמפרים, אול-סטיילרים וכל חובבי היפ הופ נפגשים מדי שבוע לעשות מעגלים על השחמט. אלופי עולם כמו בי-בוי פוטר גדלו על לוח השחמט. רבל סאן היה עושה ראפ עם סגול 59 על השחמט בזמן שמארקי פאנק תיקלט. עידן טי, אלוף "מלך הברייקדאנס" של ערוץ 2, התאמן על השחמט מדי שבוע. ברייקינג הוא עכשיו ספורט אולימפי, דרך אגב. פוטר מדורג במקום ה-30 בדירוג העולמי. כל זה, ועוד, הופכים את לוח השחמט לאתר תרבותי והיסטורי חשוב בירושלים.

תקופת הקורונה:

במהלך סגרי הקורונה, מנוף ענק עמד על השחמט כדי להוסיף קומות חדשות לבניין הסמוך. המנוף עמד שם במשך חודשים רבים. כשהעבודה הסתיימה, השחמט היה סדוק ושבור לחלוטין. מאז סיום הקורונה, רקדנים המשיכו להתאסף על השחמט מדי פעם, אבל העדיפו להתאמן על ה"טיילז" ברחוב הלל 23 (כי הרצפה שם חלקה), בכיכר החתולות (כי היא תמיד ריקה), בגן העצמאות (כי לא יתלוננו אם ממשיכים שם מוזיקה אחרי שעה 23:00) או בכיכר ציון (כי יש שם קהל גדול).

השבוע שעבר:

בערך לפני שבוע, מנהל אגף התרבות בעירייה הודיע לכל הרקדנים שהם חייבים לחזור לרקוד על השחמט. השחמט אמור להיות המקום הייעודי להיפ הופ בירושלים.

היום (31/01/2025):

קהילת הרקדנים הירושלמית חזרה ללוח השחמט. היה מעגל כיף. אבל חיכתה לנו הפתעה גדולה. וכך אנחנו מגיעים אל...

החדשות הגדולות:

יש מזימה מרושעת להרוס את השחמט. שף מפורסם ועשיר פותח מסעדה חדשה בפינת רחוב לונץ. המסעדה תוקם בפינה שבה נמצאים פחי האשפה. השף לא רוצה שמכולות האשפה יהיו ליד הכניסה למסעדת היוקרה שלו, אז השף משלם לקבלנים שלו כדי לחפור ברחוב לונץ. המטרה היא להתקין דחסן אשפה תת-קרקעי ענק באמצע הרחוב. במילים אחרות, השף רוצה להזיז את מכולות האשפה שלא יהיו בכניסה למסעדה שלו אלא יהיו באמצע הרחוב שיסריח לכולם. אם העבודה הזאת תתחיל, זה אומר שיסגרו את רחוב לונץ למשך חודשים רבים. כשהרחוב ייפתח מחדש – לא יהיה יותר שחמט.

המאבק הגדול:

המשפט הגדול:

First, some background:

The chessboard on Luntz Street has been the place where Jerusalem hiphop has been happening, since 1985. Emcees, deejays, drummers, guitarists, b-boys, b-girls, graffiti writers, poppers, lockers, krumpers, all-stylers, and all hiphop heads have been meeting weekly on the chessboard to cypher. World champions like b-boy Poter grew up on the chessboard. Rebel Sun would rap with Sagol59 on the chessboard while MarkeyFunk deejayed. Idan-T, the first winner of the first televised breaking show in Israel (מלך הברייקדאנס של ערוץ 2), would practice at the chessboard every week. Breaking is an Olympic sport now, by the way, and Poter is #30 in the worldwide rankings. All this, and more, make the chessboard an important cultural and historical site in Jerusalem.

Pandemic Times:

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, a huge crane sat on the chessboard to add new floors to the adjacent building. The crane sat there for many months. By the time it was done with its work, the chessboard was all cracked and broken. Since COVID ended, dancers would continue to occasionally cypher on the chessboard, but preferred to practice on the Tiles (Hillel Street 23) because it has a nice smooth floor, in Hatulot Square (because it’s always empty), or in Zion Square (because they like having a big audience).

Last Week:

About 1 week ago, the cultural events manager in city hall told all the dancers that they must return to dancing on the chessboard. The chessboard is supposed to be the designated spot for hiphop to happen in Jerusalem.

Today (31/01/2025):

The Jerusalem dancer community returned to the chessboard and had a nice time. A surprise, however, was waiting for us… so now we get to…

The Big News:

There is an evil plan to destroy the chessboard. This rich and famous celebrity chef is opening a new restaurant on the corner of Luntz Street, where the trash bins are. He doesn’t want his luxury establishment to have trash bins by its door, so he is paying his contractors to dig up Luntz Street and install a big new underground trash compactor right under the middle of the street. In other words, he wants to move the trash bins away from his door to stink up the whole middle of the street for everyone. If this work begins, it will mean closing all of Luntz for many months, eventually reopening the street without a chessboard.

The Big Fight:

None of the Luntz street residents and none of the Luntz street business owners like this plan. They are all very opposed. They got a lawyer to take the celebrity chef to court and try to stop his evil plan. No one who lives and works on Luntz Street wants it to be closed for months of renovation. No one who lives and works on Luntz Street wants to have a smelly trash compactor right there in its middle. This trash compactor will be so close to the Ben Yehuda pedestrian street that people eating ice cream at Katsefet will be able to smell its stink. On the other hand, everyone who lives and works on Luntz Street loves the chessboard. They agree that the chessboard is an important cultural landmark. They like having the dancers come cypher and hope that the chessboard can stay, so that the cyphers keep happening for 40 more years, and even more into the future. We should be organizing a big celebration for 40 years of chessboard jams, Jerusalem breakdance 40th birthday, but we cannot, because we have a big fight to win first.

The Big Trial:

One week ago, the good lawyers who are on our side had a good argument in court. They noticed that there is a conflict of interests with the chef and his contractors. A private businessman should not be able to commandeer and overhaul a public street in this fashion. If he was a philanthropist who donates to make the street better for everyone, then it could have been fine, but he is not a philanthropist donating to make the street better. He is using private money to make the public street worse. Only he himself gains from this. Whoever approved this in City Hall should not have approved it. One week ago, the court judge ordered a pause of 2 weeks, so that both sides can investigate their case and return for further deliberations. This means that the trial will resume next week.

What We Must Do:

We have 1 week to make as much noise as we can about this. We have 1 week to save the chessboard. This is very urgent. We must gather as many signatures as we can on this petition to save the chessboard.
