Stop Development Threatening Millennium Woods Area, Littleover

Stop Development Threatening Millennium Woods Area, Littleover
The Issue
As a local community group passionate about our green spaces and committed to preserving habitats, I am deeply concerned about the proposed development threatening our beloved Millennium Woods in Littleover, Derby. This tranquil area not only offers a refuge for a wide variety of wildlife, but it also serves as a green escape for community members seeking tranquillity away from urban chaos. The development will completely surround this nature haven.
Millennium Woods is home to an array of biodiversity, playing a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. This year newts have been spotted in Millennium Pond. Such nearby developments pose a significant threat by potentially displacing numerous species that over the years have found safety within its lush expanse. According to recent studies, urban developments are one of the leading causes of habitat loss globally, driving many species towards endangerment.
Ainscough Strategic Land (ASL) are preparing an outline planning application for approximately 335 new homes on land surrounding millennium woods, with motor vehicle access solely on / off Moorway Lane. They are taking advantage of an out of date Derby Council local plan and as the Council are currently unable to demonstrate a 5 year housing land supply, Paragraph 11d of the NPPF dictates that planning permission should be granted unless any adverse impact of doing so would significantly and demonstrably outweigh the benefits when assessed against the policies in the Framework when taken as a whole.
Furthermore, the proposed development will inevitably exacerbate the existing traffic congestion, especially around Moorway Lane. This area is already notorious for its gridlocked roads, particularly during school hours. Additional traffic will not only increase the frustration for daily commuters but also elevate safety risks for our children attending nearby schools.
Residents like myself are concerned about the long-term implications this development will cast upon our environment and daily lives. The ecosystem services provided by such green spaces, including air quality improvement, noise reduction, and stress alleviation, are invaluable. Preserving these areas is crucial for the well-being of our community and future generations.
We urge local government officials and developers to reconsider and explore alternative sites that do not threaten vital green spaces, their wildlife or exacerbate traffic issues. Taking these concerns seriously could pave the way for a more sustainable development path that aligns with both environmental conservation and local needs.
