Dear Congress: Stop Failing Mothers

Dear Congress: Stop Failing Mothers
The Issue
As a corporate mom of two and an advocate for working mothers across the nation, I've seen firsthand the challenges that come with inadequate maternity leave, childcare, and postpartum care policies in the United States. I have spoken with countless working mothers who, like me, struggle to balance the demands of a career with the essential needs of a growing family. Through these conversations, my passion has become a pursuit for meaningful reform that ensures no mother has to choose between her professional ambitions and her family’s well-being.
Maternity leave in the US is notoriously insufficient, with many mothers having to return to work just weeks after childbirth. Unlike many other developed countries that provide months of paid leave, the US lacks a federal mandate for paid maternity leave, leaving it up to individual companies and states to decide what, if anything, they offer. This results in a patchwork of policies that often leave families financially strained and devoid of support during one of the most pivotal times of their lives.
Childcare is another area where support falls short. The high cost and limited availability of quality childcare services force many parents, particularly mothers, to make difficult decisions that may include leaving the workforce entirely. According to the US Department of Labor, the cost of childcare for a family can average $9,589 a year, disproportionately affecting low-income families. Without affordable and accessible options, the burden falls heavily on working mothers to try and manage their careers while ensuring their children are cared for in a safe environment.
Postpartum care, a critical aspect of maternal health, is too often overlooked. After giving birth, mothers face numerous physical and emotional challenges that require adequate medical and mental health support. Yet, many health insurance plans offer limited coverage for postpartum services, leaving new mothers without the resources they need to recover and thrive.
The solution lies in comprehensive federal policies that prioritize the needs of mothers and families. We need mandated paid maternity leave that aligns with international standards, and policies ensuring that quality, affordable childcare services are accessible to all families. Additionally, expanding health coverage to include postpartum care is essential for the well-being of mothers and their children.
Join us in urging lawmakers to take action. By signing this petition, you are supporting a movement dedicated to securing better leave, childcare, and postpartum care for all mothers in the United States. Let's work together to build a future where mothers can thrive both personally and professionally. Please sign and help create meaningful change for current and future generations.
