Allow backpacks in lively district secondary school

Allow backpacks in lively district secondary school
The Issue
As a student at Lively District Secondary School, I have firsthand experienced the vital role that being able to carry a backpack to classes plays in our daily education. Since the adaptation of allowing backpacks in 2020 following the COVID pandemic, students like me have become accustomed to the convenience and organizational benefits that backpacks offer. However, recent policy changes have stripped us of this privilege, imposing a significant challenge on students, particularly those with additional needs.
Backpacks offer a crucial lifeline for students with learning disabilities, like myself. Having immediate access to educational materials and personal resources keeps distractions to a minimum and helps maintain focus. Studies show that organizational tools such as backpacks can enhance learning success by up to 20% for students in need of additional educational support (source: National Education Association). Furthermore, without backpacks, students waste valuable class time retrieving necessary materials.
The benefits of allowing students to carry backpacks extend beyond just organizational improvement. It significantly reduces physical strain by equitably distributing the weight of books and school supplies, which is important for adolescent physical development (source: American Academy of Pediatrics). Moreover, backpacks decrease the likelihood of lost or forgotten materials, leading to improved academic performance.
We understand concerns about security, yet many schools successfully meet safety requirements while allowing students to carry backpacks. In addition, dedicated lockers may help manage and organize the load each day without compromising the ease of backpack use. additionally, if the privilege is abused, it could be taken away. However, taking away the privilege everyone is causing additional unnecessary stress and disorganization.
By signing this petition, you join us in the fight for a balanced approach that considers both safety and practicality. Let’s restore the privilege of carrying backpacks at Lively District Secondary School and support students like myself in accessing an education that empowers rather than hinders.
Please sign this petition to bring positive change for all students in our school.
