Help keep LACC Swap Meet Open! Over 300 Vendors depend on it.

The Issue

We need your support! Help keep LACC Swap Meet open for years to come.

LACC Swap Meet generates over $700,000 a year, directly assisting 18,000 students in achieving their goals and dreams!

Since the pandemic, non-permitted street sellers have taken over the sidewalk area surrounding the weekly swap meet at LACC. The street vendors are not permitted within 500 feet of the school property by law. We are the new owners of the swap meet tasked with saving this staple swap meet a little over a year ago.

We have been attacked by some media outlets and by Councilman Elect Hugo Soto for harassing the street vendors, which has never happened.

We are not opposed to street vending. The vendors in the swap meet are street vendors themselves; many have been there for over 20 years!

In recent months, we have had three incidents involving street vendors on Monroe and Marathon, where the police or EMTs were called out. We have also been blamed for not providing staff and security on the street. We simply can't as it is not our event.

LAFD supports our plan for improvement by designating the South Side of Monroe and the North Side of Marathon as No Parking / No Stopping zones from Friday at Midnight through Sunday at 4 PM to be used for swap meet load in and load out as well as vendor and staff parking for the swap meet.

When cars are parked in these zones, it causes vendors to have to double park as they are loading in, which has potentially deadly consequences if an emergency vehicle needs to get through these areas.

We ask for support to make things safe for the community and the swap meet.

Without your support, the Swap Meet may be forced to close, leaving 200 vendors displaced with no means of earning money for their families, a flood of street vendors will line the streets, and 18,000 students will be without the funds to continue their education.

Since 1991, we have been producing events that SUPPORT street sellers by giving them a safe, profitable, and low-cost venue to make a living for their families. Selling within 500 ft is unethical and illegal and could possibly force the swap meet to close indefinitely. DON'T LET THAT HAPPEN, PLEASE!

Facts:

  • Before Covid, no street vendors would ever set up on the street surrounding the swap meet.
  • The Swap Meet generates over $700,000 that goes directly to the LACC Foundation and assists over 18,000 students annually.
  • Street Vendors take up all the street parking on Monroe and Marathon from Friday evening through Sunday, making it impossible for residents to park on either street.
  • Street Vending on Monroe and Marathon cause major safety concerns addressed by LAFD and LAPD.
  • Beer is being sold on the street, which has caused incidents involving minors and harassment of attendees exiting the swap meet.
  • It's Stealing! The street vendors benefit from LACC Swap without contributing to its operating expenses by selling items for less than the inside vendors who are also trying to feed their families.
Street Vendors feel entitled to use our Restrooms, Parking Lot, and Dumpsters which we pay over $6000 a month for.
  • Fire Department incident where it took 27 minutes for an EMT to navigate through Monroe. It's unsafe!
  • Councilman Elect Hugo Soto Martinez supports street sellers breaking the law instead of supporting the swap meet, which benefits 18,000 students yearly! His job as Councilman is to uphold the ordinance or bring a motion to change it but certainly not to advocate for street sellers not permitted where City ordinances prohibit street sellers.
