How Petitions are Protecting Animal Rights in the US

Aug 1, 2024

Animal rights have become a significant topic of discussion in recent years. The concept of animal liberation, which focuses on the struggle for justice and equality for animals, is central to this debate. Petitions play a crucial role in advocating for these rights and bringing about legislative changes. By signing and promoting petitions, individuals can help protect animals from cruelty and exploitation.

The Power of Petitions: Advocating for Animal Welfare

At Change.org, we see firsthand how passionate individuals and organizations can drive impactful change through the power of petitions. Two leading organizations in the animal welfare space, The Humane League and The Center for Biological Diversity, host several petitions on our platform. Their efforts to protect animals from abuse and extinction have inspired thousands to take action and lend their voices to critical causes. These organizations believe that non-human animals deserve moral worth independent of their utility to humans, similar to the consideration given to human rights.

The Humane League: Animal Rights Advocates Combating Animal Abuse

The Humane League is an international nonprofit which exists “to the abuse of animals raised for food.” Their work counters the misconception that animals don’t feel pain, and they focus on corporate campaigns, grassroots education, and public outreach to improve the lives of farm animals. The Humane League argues that non-human animals, like human beings, deserve protection under the law. They believe that the basic interests of animals, such as avoiding suffering, must be considered just as we consider human rights. Here are a few of the changes they’re fighting for:

Land O’Lakes: Follow Through on Your Animal Welfare Act Promises!

With more than 33,000 signatures, this petition calls on Land O’Lakes to publicly report on progress made toward its animal welfare commitments, and emphasizes the importance of legal regulation to hold corporations accountable.

Despite publicly committing to improving conditions for animals, Land O’Lakes has not fully implemented the promised changes. By mobilizing public support with a petition, The Humane League aims to pressure Land O’Lakes to fulfill its promises and set a higher standard for the industry.

The petition garnered significant attention in its first year, and supporters are urging Land O’Lakes to adopt humane practices, including providing adequate space, reducing painful procedures, and ensuring better living conditions for animals.

This push for corporate accountability highlights the growing consumer demand for ethical treatment of animals and the demand for companies to align their practices with these values. The success of this petition could pave the way for broader reforms and a more humane farming industry.

Sonic: Stop Supporting Animal Abuse!

Just as change can happen with 30,000 signatures, it can happen with 2,000. The Humane League’s 2022 petition urges Sonic to stop sourcing from suppliers that abuse animals, and to publicly report on its progress toward its cage-free commitment.

The Humane League has documented instances of severe animal cruelty in Sonic’s supply chain, including overcrowded living conditions, neglect, and inhumane slaughter practices.

By targeting a popular fast-food chain like Sonic, the petition aims to draw widespread public attention and drive change across the industry. For months, the Humane League ran parody ads about Sonic, attempting to expose their treatment of animals and asking customers to advocate for change. The ads, along with the petition, point to consumers’ power to influence corporate behavior. If Sonic implements more humane sourcing practices, the chain could set a precedent for other fast-food brands to follow and create better conditions for countless animals.

Cracker Barrel and Dunkin’: Stop Abusing Animals!

This 2022 petition with more than 30,000 supporters speaks to two more major brands, Cracker Barrel and Dunkin’, and urges them to adopt more humane animal welfare practices. By focusing on popular brands, The Humane League aims to set a new standard in the fast food industry. The petition points to current inhumane practices in their supply chains like small cages that injure egg-laying hens.

By demanding that Cracker Barrel and Dunkin’ transition to cage-free eggs and higher welfare standards, supporters hope to reduce the suffering of animals in their supply chains.

To drive awareness of this petition, The Humane League drove a mobile billboard throughout several cities and organized a petition signature delivery with Atlanta influencer Christopher “Soul” Eubanks and other supporters. The team of animal welfare advocates dropped off more than 20,000 petition signatures at Inspire Brands’ HQ, Dunkin’s parent company, bringing to life the number of people who want to see change.

This petition could lead to significant improvements in animal welfare and inspire more companies to prioritize ethical sourcing.

The Center for Biological Diversity: Preserving Endangered Species

The Center for Biological Diversity works to “secure a future for all species, including great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction.” Through science, law, and creative media, they work to protect the world’s diversity of wild animals and plants for future generations.

Laws and regulations are core to this mission. Federal laws including the Animal Welfare Act, the 28 Hour Law, the Humane Slaughter Act, the Endangered Species Act, the PACT Act, the Lacey Act, and the Swine Health Protection Act also work to protect animals from extinction.

In conjunction with laws and regulations, the Center for Biological Diversity hopes to preserve a rich animal environment across the world. Here are a few of their impactful petitions:

Save the Wolves of Greater Yellowstone

With more than 80,000 signatures, this petition seeks to protect the wolves of Greater Yellowstone from being hunted and eradicated. The Center for Biological Diversity advocates for the ethical treatment of animals, including wolves, in their conservation efforts. They aim to raise awareness of the ecological importance of wolves, which play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems through prey population control and biodiversity. However, wolves are frequently targeted by hunting and culling.

The petition calls for stronger protections for wolves, including reinstating their endangered species status and implementing stricter hunting regulations. By mobilizing public support, the Center for Biological Diversity aims to pressure policymakers to prioritize the conservation of wolves and officially recognize their vital role in the ecosystem.

The success of this petition could lead to more robust protections for wolves and other endangered species across the country. In fact, the petition starters reached out to their supporters to share a new petition focused on wolves of the Rockies.

Ban African Elephant Trophy Imports Now!

Targeting the import of African elephant trophies, this petition seeks to end the practice of trophy hunting. With 38,000 signatures, it advocates for stronger international policies to protect these iconic animals. The Center for Biological Diversity writes that African elephants are facing severe threats from poaching and habitat loss, and trophy hunting exacerbates these issues by incentivizing the killing of elephants for sport.

The petition calls on policymakers to ban the import of elephant trophies into the United States, which is currently a major destination for them.

Success in this campaign could lead to a significant reduction in the demand for elephant trophies and support the conservation of this endangered species.

Keep Grizzly Bears Protected Under the Endangered Species Act

Finally, this petition advocates for maintaining grizzly bears’ endangered status and ensuring they continue to receive necessary protections. The petition calls for equal consideration of the interests of grizzly bears and adequate legal protections. The Center for Biological Diversity stresses the importance of legal safeguards in preserving any vulnerable species. Grizzly bears are currently protected under the Endangered Species Act, which has been instrumental in their recovery. However, proposals to delist them threaten to reverse decades of conservation efforts.

The petition highlights the ongoing threats that grizzly bears face, including habitat loss, human-wildlife conflicts, and climate change. By keeping grizzly bears protected under the Endangered Species Act, the petition starters aim to ensure the bears continue to receive the legal protections necessary for their survival.

The petition has garnered widespread support with 40,000 signatures, reflecting the public’s commitment to preserving these animals for future generations.

The Impact of Collective Action

The success of these petitions demonstrates the power of collective action, and legislative measures like the Animal Welfare Act show what can come from these types of efforts. When individuals come together to support a cause, they can create substantial momentum and drive meaningful change.

Along with legislative efforts, organizations like the Animal Legal Defense Fund advocate on behalf of animals. The animal rights movement is far-reaching, and animal rights groups across the world are fighting to end unnecessary suffering in the wild or on factory farms.

On Change.org, thousands of petitions target animal welfare, highlighting the public’s growing concern for ethical treatment and conservation. These petitions hope to minimize animal suffering, bolster animal rights, and enact basic legal rights for farmed animals, domesticated animals, and other animals.

Animal Protection: Protecting Our Planet’s Wildlife

The fight to protect animals and preserve biodiversity is ongoing, but the efforts of organizations like The Humane League and The Center for Biological Diversity offer hope and inspiration.
