The Issue

Ruth López is a courageous human rights defender in El Salvador who has dedicated her life to protecting democracy, transparency, and constitutional rights. Her work has made her a target in an increasingly repressive political climate. Now, her freedom, safety, and reputation are under direct attack.

On May 18, 2025, Ruth was arrested at her home in San Salvador and held incommunicado for over 40 hours, with no access to her family or legal counsel.

Authorities have accused her of embezzlement tied to her past advisory role with the country’s electoral tribunal—but no credible evidence has been provided, and no transparent legal process has been followed.

Her detention has been condemned by major international human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, as part of a disturbing pattern of political persecution and suppression of dissent in El Salvador. This arrest is widely seen as a tactic to intimidate civil society, silence critics, and dismantle accountability mechanisms.

In December 2024, Ruth was recognized by the BBC as one of the 100 most inspiring and influential women in the world. She was honored for her fearless advocacy in anti-corruption, constitutional law, and democratic protections. As a leading feminist voice and legal expert, Ruth has empowered others to speak out—even when doing so places them at risk.

We, the global community, demand the following:

✅ Immediate release of Ruth López from arbitrary detention.

✅ Guaranteed safety now and in the future for Ruth López and her family.

✅ Full legal, physical, and psychological protection from state and non-state actors.

✅ An end to all defamation and disinformation campaigns targeting her.

✅ Respect for due process, constitutional rights, and freedom of expression in El Salvador.

✅ Independent international oversight by human rights bodies to monitor and ensure her protection.

🛡 Why This Matters:

Ruth López is not a criminal—she is a defender of rights, dignity, and truth. Attacks on her are attacks on all Salvadorans who dare to speak out. Her persecution threatens democracy itself.

We urgently call for guaranteed protection not only for Ruth López but also for her loved ones, who may be placed at risk due to her advocacy. This guarantee must extend into the future, regardless of political transitions or media cycles.

By signing this petition, you’re joining the call to defend Ruth López, her family, and all human rights defenders who put their lives on the line for justice.

Say her name. Free Ruth López. Protect her rights and her future.
