Water Safety @ Hood River Event Site

The Issue

Just yesterday a 10-year-old girl was swimming in the Nichols Basin Recreational Beach on the East side of Hood River Event Site, between the grassy area and the boat launch. Though there were many people nearby who were adequately capable of attending to this young girl who quickly became in danger of drowning, no one was presently paying attention or able to respond in a timely fashion to save her life. This is not the first fatal drowning Hood River has experienced, and if we do not act fast, it won't be the last.

We can do better, Hood River!

The Port of Hood River privately owns and manages most of the Hood River waterfront, and they need to make changes for the betterment and safety of those who come to enjoy the greatest summer spot on Earth. We, the local water enthusiasts, business owners, first-responders, moms, dads, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, and neighbors, can make our voices heard!

We are calling on and strongly encouraging the Port of Hood River to establish a dedicated water safety program.

By signing this petition you are are telling the Port of Hood River and our city that you want them to enact the following & more:

  • Certified and highly trained Red Cross Lifeguards with First Aid/CPR/AED qualifications at all swimming locations where children are present.
  • Lifeguard towers staffed with a diverse understanding of all watersports and available jet-skis & rescue sleds to access anyone who is in danger or need of assistance while on the water.
  • Select and clearly mark safe areas to be designated for swimming while restricting the more 'high-risk' areas.
  • Free open water swim classes lead by Certified Red Cross Lifeguards, from May - September, for families and adolescents to attend and develop their comfort and skill level abilities.
  • Floating docks in the Nichols Basin, with Lifeguard presence, that create more space for adolescents and families to safely recreate on the water.

This is our chance to make a difference in our community! No life should ever be at risk when our city has the funding and ability to provide quality water safety and support.

Please help us spread the word and share this petition with as many people as possible!
