Home in New Albany: Calling for the Development of a Homeless Shelter

Home in New Albany: Calling for the Development of a Homeless Shelter
The Issue
Nearly half of the citizens in New Albany are one missed paycheck away from houselessness. Is that you? Let this be your official notice: You cannot stay in New Albany. There isn't a homeless shelter in New Albany.
If it happened today, here are your Resources as of 5/31/2026:
- Homeless Coalition = Case management, zero financial assistance for prevention/intervention
- Trustee's Office = Extremely limited financial assistance (approximate cap of $300)
- Salvation Army = Not currently accepting applications for assistance.
- Hope Southern Indiana = Can only help once a year, reports limited funding due to increased need
- Call churches = Be the first to leave a voicemail and pray for a returned call in time
- Catalyst Rescue Mission = Only homeless shelter between New Albany, Clarksville, and Jeffersonville/limited to no space available daily, located in Jeffersonville
- Sleeping in public = You will be arrested/On July 1, 2026, public camping will be illegal in the state of Indiana.
Who will you call? Can you miss work while trying to access resources? Where will you go? How will you get there? How will you eat next week? What will you do with your belongings?
1 in 5 people living in New Albany are using these resources regularly and are at risk for houselessness.
Today, community partners/organizations serving in New Albany estimate that there are approximately 80-100 unhoused citizens that they serve daily and/or weekly. This number does not fully account for the people who are living outdoors and displaced (living with family/friends).
Elected officials in New Albany, along with many other members of this community, have recently complained of the visual disturbance of unhoused citizens in New Albany in public spaces. They have raised personal safety concerns regarding their public occupancy without concern for the safety of those living in New Albany without housing.
WE CALL FOR THE CITY OF NEW ALBANY TO BEGIN PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF A YEAR-ROUND HOMELESS SHELTER TO SERVE THE CITIZENS OF NEW ALBANY IMMEDIATELY.
We ask that you sign this petition in support of the most vulnerable members of our community (which could be you).
We ask that you sign this petition as an official notice to the City of New Albany that the citizens of this city hold them accountable for ensuring our community is safe for all its citizens.
We ask that you sign this petition to ensure that everyone in New Albany has somewhere safe to go in their time of need- somewhere to sleep, somewhere to eat, somewhere where someone will help you access resources, and somewhere where someone isn't wishing you weren't there.
Thank you.
