Aún quedan miles de grandes simios encerrados en zoos de todo el mundo, muchos de ellos en España. 

Esa línea que nos separa del resto de especies no existe, nos atrevemos a transformar vidas en mercancía a cambio de dinero. España no es una excepción.

Los grandes simios son animales increíblemente inteligentes, sensibles, autónomos, que crean lazos afectivos muy fuertes con los miembros de sus familias. Son empáticos y poseen capacidades cognitivas y sociales muy desarrolladas; se comunican a través de una gran variedad de vocalizaciones, gestos, expresiones corporales y faciales. Fabrican y utilizan herramientas a través de hojas, piedras y ramas para obtener alimento.

Son seres con emociones y sentimientos que sufren alejados de sus congéneres, privados de su libertad; ningún animal merece vivir en un zoo. 

Me llamo Irene, he iniciado esta petición con solo 15 años para liberar a los grandes simios de estos zoológicos en los que ya algunos nacen y crecen atrapados entre paredes, sin llegar nunca a poder desarrollar de manera natural las características que les definen.

Por desgracia, aún hay zoológicos en España que no cumplen las mínimas leyes que existen en nuestro país de protección de estos animales. La situación actual de los zoos en España es de las peores de Europa.

Muchos grandes simios en zoológicos españoles viven en un estado no ético que les causa mucho sufrimiento, trastornos psicológicos, comportamientos antinaturales y estereotipias como el balanceo constante y la automutilación.

Algunos de ellos permanecen en pequeñas jaulas y cajas de cristal que no les permiten ni siquiera tocar la tierra o interactuar con otros simios cautivos. Los grandes simios necesitan la libertad que les hemos robado, seguir al lado de sus madres y otros miembros de su familia, vivir en las selvas que conocen como su único hogar. Nada justifica que determinemos sus vidas.

No podemos decidir la vida, la libertad, el comportamiento y la salud física, mental y emocional de los grandes simios.

Tenemos que acabar con las raíces de la cautividad animal. España es la puerta de entrada directa hacia Europa en el tráfico ilegal de especies, por lo tanto, es clave en la lucha por los derechos de los grandes simios. Este comercio ilegal está lejos de decrecer. Por lo menos 3000 grandes simios son extraídos de la naturaleza cada año. Y se estima que por cada uno de estos chimpancés en cautividad, para el entretenimiento o convertirlo en mascota, 5 o 10 han muerto.

Nuestro país debería empezar a actuar para no permitir que estos animales vivan encerrados en zoos o sean utilizados como mascotas. Para ello es clave prohibir su cría en cautividad y acabar con la adquisición y el tráfico ilegal de chimpancés, orangutanes, gorilas y bonobos, todos ellos en peligro de extinción.

Cada uno de ellos importa. Necesitan rehabilitarse psicológicamente, recuperar sus instintos y volver a adaptarse a su entorno natural en el lugar más cerca que existe a la libertad para ellos, un santuario. Por eso partimos desde el momento en el que este ciclo de sufrimiento inicia. 

Firma esta petición ahora para que España prohíba la compra y cría de grandes simios para su cautividad y no se siga manteniendo a cientos de estos animales en zoológicos.

There are still thousands of great apes locked up in zoos around the world, many of them in Spain.

That line that separates us from the rest of the species does not exist, we dare to transform lives into merchandise in exchange for money.  Spain is no exception.

Great apes are incredibly intelligent, sensitive and autonomous animals that create very strong affective bonds with their family members. They are empathic and have highly developed cognitive and social abilities. They communicate through a wide variety of vocalizations, gestures, body and facial expressions. They use and make tools from leaves, stones and branches to obtain food.

They are beings with emotions and feelings that suffer away from their peers, deprived of their freedom; no animal deserves to live in a zoo.

My name is Irene, I started this petition when I was only 15 years old to free the great apes from these zoos where some are already born and grow up trapped between walls, without ever being able to naturally develop the characteristics that define them.

Unfortunately, there are still zoos in Spain that do not comply with the minimum laws that exist in our country for the protection of these animals. The current situation of zoos in Spain is one of the worst in Europe.

Many great apes in Spanish zoos live in an unethical way that causes them a lot of suffering, psychological disorders, unnatural behaviors and stereotypes such as constant rocking and self-mutilation.

Some of them remain in small cages and glass boxes that do not allow them to even touch the ground or interact with other captive apes.  Great apes need the freedom we have stolen from them, to stay with their mothers and other family members, to live in the jungles they know as their only home. Nothing justifies us determining their lives.

We cannot decide the life, freedom, behavior, and the physical, mental, and emotional health of great apes.

We have to end the roots of animal captivity.  Spain is the direct gateway to Europe in the illegal trafficking of species, therefore, it is key in the fight for the rights of great apes. This illegal trade is far from diminishing. At least 3,000 great apes are taken from the wild each year. And it is estimated that for every one of these chimpanzees in captivity, for entertainment or as pets, 5 or 10 have died.

Our country should start acting not to allow these animals to live locked up in zoos or be used as pets. For this, it is essential to prohibit their breeding in captivity and end the illegal acquisition and trafficking of chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas and bonobos, all of which are in danger of extinction.

Every one of them matters. They need to rehabilitate psychologically, recover their instincts and re-adapt to their own natural environment in the closest place to freedom that exists for them, a sanctuary. That is why we start from the moment in which this cycle of suffering begins.
