Expand Electrologists' scope of practice in Massachusetts

Expand Electrologists' scope of practice in Massachusetts
The Issue
Proposal to Expand the Scope of Practice for Massachusetts Electrologists
Introduction
The Massachusetts Association of Electrologists (MAE) respectfully proposes expanding the scope of practice for licensed Electrologists to encompass the use of an Electrolysis Epilator and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology for the treatment of superficial skin concerns. Massachusetts Electrologists are dedicated to providing clients with the highest quality care. However, our current scope of practice restricts us from fully utilizing our expertise and equipment in electrolysis and the treatment of superficial skin issues with Electrolysis Epilators and IPL devices.
Clarification of Scope
To clarify, this proposal does not seek permission for Electrologists to perform ablative medical procedures, invasive dermatology-specific treatments, or all services typically offered at medical spas, esthetician spas, or dermatology practices. Treatments would be strictly limited to those performed with an Electrolysis Epilator or IPL device. Although our profession has always focused on hair removal, technologies like Electrolysis Epilators and IPL are also effective in addressing other superficial skin concerns— a capability that we are well-trained to handle.
Challenges Faced by Electrologists
Electrologists regularly encounter financial and professional obstacles due to the restrictive nature of their practice, which currently confines them to hair removal services only. Significant time and resources are invested in education and required continuing education. Our comprehensive training prepares us not only to manage unwanted hair but also to treat various skin concerns. Expanding our scope to include IPL and Electrolysis Epilators for superficial skin treatments would benefit both Electrologists and clients seeking comprehensive skincare solutions.
Expertise and Safety
With our specialized training, Electrologists can deliver safe, efficient, and effective treatments. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery recognizes that modern Electrolysis and IPL technologies are safe and commonly used to treat skin issues such as sun spots, fine lines, and mild acne scars. These technologies, when operated by trained and certified professionals like Electrologists, are widely acknowledged for their positive impact on skin health and appearance.
