Make a fair pay offer that’s not linked to a detriment in the conditions of lecturers. Increased workloads lead to higher stress levels leading to absence and impact on educational quality standards.

The Issue

On Thursday 6th February academic staff across all four campuses of Edinburgh College took the first of 38 days of industrial action against a pay and conditions package rejected in a January ballot by 92% of members. The action was supported by students and support staff and culminated in a rally of almost 200 lecturers outside the Scottish parliament addressed by Branch and national officials as well as supportive MSPs.

Subsequent to this action, representatives of the Board of Management invited EIS-FELA reps to a meeting on the 11th February where an adapted offer was tabled. Board members acknowledged our concerns over the removal of a weekly cap on teaching time, and the implementation of an annualised hours regime. They also recognised the lowly place of Edinburgh College staff in the FE Sector pay scales.

Officials will go to members this Thursday to invite feedback on the offer, but will not be recommending its details to colleagues. Though the cap has been re-instated the figure of 24hrs plus flexibility for cover constitutes both a threat to the jobs of PT and fixed term staff, and a detriment to the established conditions of 80% of our members.

Progress has undoubtedly been made, but in defence of their ability to plan and prepare courses, course materials, lessons, study trips, placements, recruit students and interview, liaise with employers, universities and other stakeholders, members are resolved in their determination to continue strike action until the Board concede no detriment to the best aggregate conditions of the legacy Colleges.

Our prioritizing of conditions has been thrown into stark relief by recently released College data showing 41% of staff absences being attributable to stress, anxiety and depression.

Officials are scheduled to meet with the Board this Monday the 17th February, and given the strength of feeling amongst academic staff, emboldened by the success of our ongoing action and emergence of the absence data which confirms our concerns over the likely consequences of any proposed deterioration in conditions, we hope that governors will look again at their current offer.

Signing our petition will strengthen our case for a straightforward pay offer with no link to changes in conditions.
