Nobel for Sir Nicholas

Nobel for Sir Nicholas
The issue
In 1938, 29 year old stockbroker Nicholas Winton cancelled a Swiss ski vacation to join a friend in Prague to review Jewish refugee work. Winton became involved in the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia and established a Children’s Section committed to helping Jewish children seek refuge in England.
Between 1938 and September 1939, Winton arranged for the safe passage of 669 mostly Jewish children out of Czechoslovakia. Winton's Czech Kindertransport, as later noted by one of the saved children, "rescued the greater part of the Jewish children of my generation in Czechoslovakia."
Today, the descendants of Winton's 669 children number more than 5000.
On 19 May 2014, Sir Nicholas will be turning 105.
For his extraordinary humanitarian achievements, the Czech parliament has nominated Sir Nicholas for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.
We in Australia, and our friends abroad, support that nomination.
