Provide mental health referral information to users

The issue

It is a long held expectation that broadcasters, publishers, journalists and media makers will provide referral to mental health services when they cover topics with potential mental health triggers. This has been an industry standard for a number of decades.

Social media platforms have become a vital source of public information and when major events happen social media is the platform many in the community use to process, discuss and come to terms with these events.

Social media platforms should be held to the same social and ethical standards of other communication platforms and should provide prominent mental health referral information at times when topics with significant trigger potential are trending.

Facebook and Twitter - This petition calls upon you to provide appropriate mental health referral information in the feeds of your users at times of high trigger risk. As commercial entities, you stand to profit from the communities you serve and with that comes a corporate and social responsibility to ensure that that the health and safety of your users is supported.
